THIMPHU, Bhutan — Not long ago, when Bhutan’s government tried to enroll children in school, parents hid them in the attic and bribed government agents with butter and cheese to go away. Families needed their children as field hands. The last thing they cared about were books.

The Kingdom of Bhutan, tucked away in the Himalayas, just got TV. Now it’s home to ambitious young authors who are telling their country’s stories for the first time, usually in English.

This week YouthQuake travels to the Bhutan Literature Festival to try and decode what is churning in the hearts and mind of young Bhutan. As Bhutan transitions into a democracy and enters into its 3rd union election, what is the basis on which young Bhutanese people will vote on. We also try to find out what is the mantra behind the happiness of this beautiful country cocooned between China and India?

The Dochula Pass (Alt 3100m) is a mountain pass in the snow covered Himalayas within Bhutan on the road from Thimpu to Punakha where 108 memorial chortens or stupas known as "Druk Wangyal Chortens" have been built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother. Apart from the chortens there is a monastery called the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in honour of the fourth Druk Gyalpo (head of the state of Bhutan), Jigme Singye Wangchuck; the open grounds in its front yard is a venue for the annual Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival. The pass with 108 memorial chortens is adjacent to the country's first Royal Botanical Park.

The Snowman Trek, a documentary shot in Bhutan during the 2016 Snowmen Trek, captures the experiences of what it is like running the mountain trails in Bhutan.

The film by Ben Clark, who is an American mountaineer and film maker, is all set for its release in some 400 theatres across America next week.

Calling it a history made in the himalayan kingdom, the 1 hour 45 minute film shows how Ben Clark’s team, made up of professional ultra-runners, completed the 189-mile Snowman Trek in just 15 days.

It usually takes runners up to a month to complete the trek. The film describes the Snowman Trek, which spans across 11 mountain passes, some as high as 5,000 metres above the sea level, as world’s hardest trek.
