Bhutan to receive its first tourist next week after more than a year

After more than a year, Bhutan will receive its first tourist next week. She is an American who visited the country in 2019 as well. According to the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB), there are many like her who have expressed their interest to visit Bhutan. However, they are yet to register with the council. As per a recent notification from the TCB, all incoming tourists will have to apply through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. They will have to undergo the 21-day mandatory facility quarantine and also pay the daily sustainable development fee of USD 65 for the period. Moreover, they will be required to bear the charges for quarantine and COVID tests.

Bhutan’s forests absorb carbon dioxide 10 times more than the country’s annual emission

In what is defined as a good performance and positive contribution towards global climate change mitigation efforts, the country’s forests have the capacity to absorb 8.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. It is an increase from a little over 6 million tonnes in 2010. This is as per Bhutan’s National Forest Reference Emission Level and Forest Reference Level developed by the Department of Forests and Park Services (DoFPS).

Indian tourists will be required to arrange their travel through a Bhutanese ground handler who will process e-permits, arrange certified guides and local transportation. A detailed itinerary will need to be agreed to by both sides – Indian tourist group as well as the Bhutanese authorities.
