A wood-burning stove, locally known as bukhari, is still a popular heating solution in some parts of Bhutan, especially in the highlands. Made from iron and designed to heat the room as well as cook and heat water on its roof, they are commonly used in homes and kitchens to provide heat during the cold winter months. They are highly effective and can quickly heat a room or space. Families usually sit around the bukhari to eat dinner or chat. .into.the.sunset

It’s an adventure going to Laya, one of the highland communities of Bhutan; a 7-hour drive from Thimphu till the Tongshida base camp, the point where motorable road ends, followed by a 4-hour hike to Laya with aqua green glacial river and breath-taking natural scenery along the trail. If the trek sounds too difficult, visitors also have the option of availing the helicopter service to be dropped off in the mountains.

The highlands of Bhutan offer a special and authentic travel experience as the region is home to many highland villages where visitors can participate and learn the daily life of locals and immerse themselves in Bhutanese culture and customs. The highlands are also known for their awe-inspiring natural beauty; the region is characterized by beautiful Himalayan mountains, steep valleys, clear glacial rivers and pristine forests.

The famous Royal Highland Festival is held every year from October 23-24 in Laya.

Chapcha Darjaychoeling Goenzin Dratshang, also known as Dokhachoe Goenpa in Chukha, is a very popular pilgrimage site. Pilgrims from across the country come here to offer prayers to Lhamo Ekajati, known popularly as Aum Kangchim.

It is believed that your every wish will come true if your prayers for Aum Kangchim are sincere. Today, for people planning to go abroad, the goenpa is a must-visit pilgrimage site. Many come here to pray for Visa.

On weekends, at least 100 people visit the goenpa. Some come with their passport and Visa to thank Aum Kangchim.

According to the dratsang’s Uzin (principal), Tobgay, people say that Aum Kangchim grants their wishes. “I have seen many people come back to thank Aum Kangchim.”

It is believed that the people of Chapcha have prospered because of Aum Kangchim’s blessings. Who is Aum Kangchim? How did she come to Chapcha?

According to Tobgay, Aum Kangchim is Pel Yeshey Goenpo’s second mother of his four mothers. She is a guardian of mantras with a single top-knot, an eye in the middle of her forehead, a fang, and a breast. Her statue at Dokhachu Goenpa was brought from Tumdra Ami Nye in Dala, Phuentsholing during the Duar war in 1864.

According to oral history, the dzongpoen (governer) and khangnyer (caretaker) brought the statue with them and when it reached a place called Chapcha Zhomola, it could not be taken further.

When the two devotees asked where it would like to be taken, the statue is believed to have turned towards where Dokhachoe Goenpa stands today.

Dokhachoe Goenpa was founded in 1650 by Choeje Thinley Jamtsho, a grandson of Phajo Drukgom Zhipo. Choeje Thinley Jamtsho was Zhabdrung’s drungchen, (secretary) who travelled through Chapcha after his return from Ladakh.

Choeje Thinley Jamtsho is said to have meditated in eight directions of the Lhakhang. And after three days of meditation from a cliff near the goenpa, it is said that he saw Khachoe Dakpai Zhingkham (a heavenly abode) through the cliff. Hence the name Dokhachoe Goem.

If you want to see and learn about traditional Bhutanese architecture, visit a Dzong or a temple. Traditional Bhutanese architecture has many interesting aspects. For instance, the location of doors in traditional architecture is usually decided based on Buddhist astrological instructions and beliefs about which direction the door must face. Historically, there were no set dimensions for doors, and their size was determined by the head carpenter based on the building's design, size and importance. The pillars, window frames and beams are adorned with elaborate carvings, creating a distinctive appearance. Another thing that makes traditional Bhutanese architecture unique is that no iron nails are used to build them, instead relying on small wooden dowels of similar size.

Repost : Archery, Bhutan's national sport, is a challenging sport but there are plenty of opportunities to pick up a bow and arrow while you are visiting the kingdom. Ask if your hotel offers archery experiences, or learn about the sport at the Simply Bhutan museum in Thimphu. Trying a new sport is perhaps the fastest and most fun way to come closer, to work together as a unit, to teach your children to be a sport! To win or lose is not the point, to play is. Enjoy the Bhutanese hospitality and traditional songs and dance as you learn to play.
