“BHUTAN-THAILAND FRIENDSHIP DRIVE – CONNECTING PEOPLES OF THE TWO KINGDOMS BY LAND”

Tourism Council of Bhutan is honored to welcome Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Drive which finally reached Thimphu today. A team of 21 officials from Royal Thai government, Royal Bhutanese Embassy, Thairung Union car public company Limited and two youth from Bhutan and Thailand represented on 21st June, 2019 from Bangkok in the first road journey from Bangkok to Thimphu.
The eight day journey set off from Bangkok on Friday 21st June, 2019. They have covered 3,000 km. The route followed the Myanmar, Thailand, India trilateral highway through the three countries entering Bhutan through Phuentsholing on the Bhutan India border yesterday, 27th June, 2019.
The Bhutan-Thailand- Drive connecting people of the two Kingdoms by land is one of the flagship events commemorating the 30th anniversary in 2019 of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Bhutan. It is also celebration of the auspicious Royal coronation in Thailand and reflects both the countries reverence of the Monarchy Institution.

Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and DusitD2 Bhutan are the event sponsors.

The United Nations Development Programme presented a Special Award of Recognition to His Majesty The King to honor His Majesty’s leadership in advancing human development and the wellbeing and happiness of the people of Bhutan.

The UNDP announced that the Award takes into account three major Human Development Achievements: His Majesty’s championing of the holistic development paradigm of Gross National Happiness, His Majesty’s leadership in environment conservation and climate action which has resulted in Bhutan being the only carbon negative country in the world, and His Majesty’s guidance, which ensured a smooth transition of the system of governance and strong democratic foundations to be established in Bhutan. This has been evident from the significant and tangible development results reflected in the National Human Development Report of 10 years of Democracy.

Mr. Achim Steiner, the Administrator of UNDP and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, presented the Award to His Majesty The King.
