Perched dramatically above the deep gorge of the Mangde Chhu, Trongsa Dzong is one of Bhutan’s most impressive and strategically important fortresses. Built in 1648 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it once controlled the only east–west route in the country, making it the key to ruling Bhutan.
With its massive white walls, intricate wooden windows, and maze-like courtyards, the dzong feels like a living piece of history. It is also the ancestral seat of Bhutan’s royal family—traditionally, the Crown Prince serves as the Governor of Trongsa before becoming king.
