Khuru (darts) Sports - is a popular outdoor team sport often played during festivals and archery tournaments. It has been played by people of Bhutan for a long time, but it became more popular in the country during the reign of our Second King Druk Gyalpo Jigme Wangchuck. It is played all across Bhutan and can take up the entire day, often continuing long into the evening! It’s similar to dart but the size of the dart is bigger than the usual plastic dart with metal tip. On request, we prepare matches for our guests to take part and celebrate on hitting a bullseye.

“Khurus” are carved out of hard-wood and there is no restriction on the weight or the size to be played. To strengthen it metal-casing or other feasible casing is done on the lower end. A “khuru” can weight anything from 150gms to about 300gms. The distance between the targets is about 25-30 meters and the target is almost 11 inches by 5 inches. A bullseye means your team sings and dances a traditional victory display, same as with archery.

Takin - National animal of Bhutan. The animal hold cultural and historical significance as legend has it that in the 15th century when Lam Drukpa Kunley also referred to as “The Divine Madman” arrived in Bhutan from Tibet he delivered religious teachings to the people whereupon they requested him to conjure up a miracle. He agreed, on the condition that he would be fed lunch – a whole cow and a whole goat.

Doing as he commanded, the people offered him his massive lunch. After finishing his lunch, he fixed the head of the goat onto the body of the cow and with a snap of his fingers uttered a mantra. The animal instantly sprung to life and began grazing on the meadows. He then named it the “Dong Gyem Tsey” (Takin).

A Takin Preserve in Motithang which is off the road leading to the BBS Tower, houses these animals where visitors can observe them and take pictures. Our guests find the best time to view the takin up close is early morning, when they gather near the fence to feed.

Bumthang Region - this region that spans from 2,600-4,500 m, is the religious heartland of the nation and home to some of its oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries. Tales of Guru Padmasambhava and the tertons (“religious treasure-discoverers”) still linger in this sacred region. Bumthang Dzongkhag consists of four main valleys, Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor. Choekhor is the largest of the four and is widely considered as ‘Bumthang Valley’. The valleys are broad and gentle carved by the ancient glaciers. The wide and scenic valleys draws a large number of tourists each year.

This dzongkhag is one of the most richly endowed districts in terms of historical and spiritual legacy. Some of Bhutan’s oldest and most venerated temples are found in Bumthang, including Jambey Lhakhang. According to legend this ancient temple was built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo in 659 A.D. as part of a chain of 108 simultaneously constructed temples in order to subdue an evil demoness that lay over the Himalayan region. It is the oldest lhakhang in Bhutan. There are numerous other temples and shrines worth visiting in Bumthang and many of them are linked to Guru Rinpoche’s visit in 746 A.D. The fertile valleys of Bumthang are covered in fields of buckwheat, rice and potatoes. Apple orchards and dairy farms are also common sights here. This serene region is one of the most peaceful places in the kingdom.

Buddha Dordenma Statue - is a huge 51m-tall steel statue of Buddha Shakyamuni which commands the entry to the Thimphu valley. The massive three-storey base houses a large chapel full of thousands of donated Buddha statues, while the body itself is filled with 125,000 smaller statues of Buddha. The chapel roof has some particularly fine mandalas. The place looks amazing when illuminated at night. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall.

The area is called Changri Kuensel Phodrang after the former palace of the 13th Druk Desi that once stood here.The paved road to the site, also known as 'Buddha Point', passes a new Hindu temple and is a popular biking route. It is a place where many local residents go to during holidays and where families offer prayers and relax at parks near the statue.

Kurje Temple - located in Bumthang, the temple complex is 5km north of the district headquarter and 1 km from Jampa Lhakhang. This majestic complex is located on the right bank of the Chamkhar river opposite Tamshing and Khonchogsum lhakhang. The Kurje complex is made up of three buildings facing south surrounded by an enclosure made of 108 chortens. Kurje is one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan as Guru Rinpoche meditated here and left the imprint of his body on a rock. Guests are delighted to a spiritual and tranquil environment where nature and spiritual essence combine.

The Temple is made up of three buildings facing south;The first building on the right (east) is the oldest and was built on the rock where Guru Rinpoche meditated by King Sendha of Bumthang after his conversion to Buddhism. The second building called the Sampa lhundrup temple was built in 1900 by His Majesty Gongsa Ugyen Wangchuck, the First King, while he was still the Penlop of Trongsa. The temple was built to house a monumental statue of Guru Rinpoche which was modelled after the advice of the great Nyingmapa lama, the Bakha Trulku, Rigzin Khamsum Yondrol.

A third building, the Ka Gon Phur sum lhakhang, was consecrated in June 1990 by the great master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. It was undertaken by Mayum Chonying Wangmo Dorji and the Royal Grand-mother Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck whereby the construction started in1984 in dedication to all the past Kings of Bhutan and with deepest prayers for the long life and successful reign of the 4th Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and for the eternal happiness and well-being of the Kingdom of Bhutan in particular and all sentient beings in general.

Phobjikha is a bowl-shaped glacial valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains, bordering the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. It is one of the favorite places for our guests to visit in Bhutan!

The valley is snowbound during the height of winter and many of the valley's 4700 inhabitants, including the monks, shift to winter residences in Wangdue Phodrang during December and January, just as the cranes move in to take their place. Even outside winter, temperatures can plummet in the afternoon, so be sure to pack some warm clothes. Because of the presence of large flock of black-necked cranes, it is one of the most important wildlife preserves in the country. In addition to the cranes there are muntjacs (barking deer), wild boars, sambars, serows, Himalayan black bears, leopards and red foxes in the surrounding hills. Some people refer to this entire region as Gangte (or Gangtey), after the goemba (Temple)that sits on a ridge above the valley.
