Discover Taktshang: Bhutan’s Legendary Cliffside Sanctuary

High above Paro Valley, clinging to a sheer cliff face, stands Taktshang, better known as the Tiger’s Nest, a monastery wrapped in mystery and majesty.

Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava flew here on the back of a tigress to meditate in a hidden cave, which later became the cradle of Bhutanese Buddhism. Today, this sacred site remains a symbol of faith and resilience, drawing both pilgrims and travelers from around the world.

The hike to Taktshang is an experience in itself, winding through pine forests strung with prayer flags, crossing rustic bridges, and opening up to breathtaking views of the valley below. Each step is a step deeper into Bhutan’s spiritual heart.

Meet the Takin: Bhutan’s National Animal
Half goat, half cow, but entirely unique! The takin is one of the world’s most unusual mammals. Native to the Eastern Himalayas and found in Bhutan’s high-altitude forests, this gentle herbivore has a golden, shaggy coat and a large, moose-like nose.

📍 You can spot them up close at the Motithang Takin Preserve in Thimphu, where a small herd roams freely in a natural enclosure. According to legend, the takin was created by Bhutan’s famous 15th-century saint, Drukpa Kuenley, who fused the head of a goat and the body of a cow after being asked to perform a miracle.

A symbol of strength, mystery, and Bhutan’s deep connection to nature, this is one animal you won’t forget.

In Bhutan, Diwali is celebrated with warmth and enthusiasm, especially among the Hindu community in the southern part of the country. Families come together to light diyas (oil lamps), share delicious sweets, and perform pujas to invoke blessings of prosperity and happiness. It’s a time for laughter, community, and connection—values Bhutan holds dear.

Each year, His Majesty The King honors the occasion by granting his blessings, traditionally blessing the sacred tika especially during the Dassai festival, which leads to Diwali. As a symbolic father figure for the Bhutanese people, His Majesty imbues the tika with royal protection and goodwill before it is sent to dzongkhags across the country.
