Among the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism—Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelug—the Nyingma and Drukpa Kagyu traditions have had the greatest influence in Bhutan.

Nyingma traces its roots to Guru Rinpoche, while Drukpa Kagyu became the dominant lineage after the unification of Bhutan by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Together, they have shaped Bhutan's spiritual and cultural heritage for centuries.

History Fact:
In the 12th century, Master Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorji the founder of Drupka Kagyu school, heard thunder echoing like a dragon’s roar from the southern valleys of Tibet. Pointing towards what now is Bhutan, he then declared it Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon. 🐉⚡⛰️
