A traditional Bhutanese tomza is a hearty pack meal of organic red rice, tender slices of nosha (beef) and succulent paksha paa (pork) cooked with red chillies and wild asparagus, served alongside fresh green ema datsi (chilli with cheese) and fiery ezay, a red chilli paste blended with aromatic zimtsi (perilla) and tingay (Sichuan pepper) that leaves your tongue deliciously tingling. A flavour-packed meal that is both delicious and filling.

Best enjoyed before a leisurely walk—because a good tomza may leave you content and more than a little sleepy!

Celebrating mushroom season at the Matsutake Mushroom Festival in Genekha, Thimphu! Bhutan is home to more than 400 varieties of mushrooms, and the prized Matsutake, locally known as Sangay Shamu, is among the most sought-after. Fresh Matsutake can fetch around Nu. 2,500–3,000 per kilogram in Bhutan and is especially enjoyed in the traditional Bhutanese dish shamu datshi.

Highly valued in Japan and other international markets, Matsutake is considered a premium delicacy and can command around US$500 per kilogram or more, depending on quality. The festival celebrates not only this treasured forest mushroom but also Bhutan’s rich biodiversity, traditional cuisine and the livelihoods of local communities.
