A beautiful young lioness, one of the six sub-adult lions of Mashatu’s ‘Thutwa pride’… we found her and one of her sisters on their own, quite a distance from the rest, keeping an eye on a family of warthogs on their way to Mashatu’s vlei area. It’s just a question of time before these 3 princesses become Mashatu’s new lion queens!

Amazing!

Amazing!

Congratulations to Kevin Dooley Photography, world-renowned photographer and cherished repeat guest of Mashatu, on winning Nature’s Best Photography’s Wildlife Category Award for 2024!

Kevin's incredible winning shot, titled "African Leopard Fight," was captured right here at Mashatu Game Reserve. Reflecting on the moment, Kevin shared, "The challenge of focusing on the action with dust swirling in the air only made this one of my most unforgettable experiences as a nature photographer."

We are beyond proud of Kevin’s achievement and honored that Mashatu's remarkable leopard population played a starring role in this celebrated moment.

Female leopard "Mathoja", the current territory holder of the productive Fig Tree Crossing area of central Mashatu, she was born approx. May 2011 which now makes her just over 13 years old. Let's hope she will stay strong and we'll still see her for many more years to come! 🤞🏼

Ever seen a “leucistic” Fork-tailed drongo? 😳

Neither have we… Fork-tailed drongos are normally pitch black (with dark red eyes)! This morning was the first such sighting for us and luckily the drongo sat still for long enough to take a picture! 🙌🏻

*Leucism is an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation affecting various animals that is marked by overall pale color or patches of reduced colouring and is caused by a genetic mutation which inhibits melanin and other pigments from being deposited in feathers.

On 21st September 2024 and as part of World Ranger Day more than 100 ranger teams spanning the diverse and varied terrains of Africa’s protected areas will compete in a coordinated 21km race across their respective landscapes carrying 22kg of kit. They will be joined by supporters from around the globe, running in solidarity.

Please support the Notugre APU team of dedicated rangers and the only ranger team competing in Botswana as they take on the Wildlife Rangers Challenge by donating to our Ranger Challenge fundraiser through the link below. Your donation not only supports these rangers but also celebrates the vital work they do every day.

The ranger push-up challenge took place on 12 August and was won by the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust team with 388 pushups in 2 minutes.

The sit-up challenge takes place on 9 September so lets give the guys our biggest encouragement!

Let's make this World Ranger Day a truly impactful one.
