INTIMATE OKAVANGO... Cha Cha Metsi sits where the Santantadibe River winds through floodplains, lagoons and tree-lined islands rich with elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo, explored by game drive, mokoro or on foot. For experienced riders, horse safaris add a dimension that very few Delta camps can offer. Nxai Travel DMC knows exactly how to place guests in the right camp at the right time, and Cha Cha Metsi is very much one of the right camps, so come and experience it with us!

FOR THE BIRDS... Nxai Stay presents one of the Makgadikgadi's most breathtaking spectacles: Nata Bird Sanctuary sits on the northeastern edge of the pans, and after one of the most generous rainy seasons Botswana has seen in years, it is currently doing something quite extraordinary.

Tens of thousands of flamingo, pelican, stilt and plover are working the shallows in every direction, the whole extraordinary gathering reflected in water that seems to have no edges and no end. From the top of the hide, the view stretches across a flooded pan so alive with movement and colour that it takes a moment for the eye to make sense of what it's seeing.

Zoroga Expedition Camp, Nxai Stay's first property on the edge of the Ntwetwe Pan, puts guests within easy reach of all of it, and the Nxai Travel team knows exactly when to go and where to position you for the best of it.

READ THE LABEL! Zoroga Expedition Camp takes the instruction on this image entirely seriously. Food in the Makgadikgadi is not an afterthought or a logistical necessity but a genuine expression of Botswana hospitality, home-cooked with the kind of warmth, generosity and local flair that reminds you why eating around a fire in the bush with good company is one of life's most quietly perfect experiences.

Portions are unapologetic, flavours are bold and the philosophy is straightforward: people who have spent a day in the open air exploring one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes have earned every single bite. Diets, as the image rightly suggests, can wait until you get home.

WHAT BIG FEET YOU HAVE! Whoever designed the lion clearly had a sense of humour, because there is something almost comically oversized about a youngster padding around the bush on feet that look borrowed from a much larger animal, all adolescent awkwardness and misplaced confidence. But give it time because within a few years those extraordinary paws will be pinning down prey with a force and precision that represents one of nature's most refined and formidable killing systems.

This is the product of millions of years of evolution distilled into an animal that is, from the tips of those ridiculous feet to the end of its tufted tail, an absolute masterpiece of predatory design. The Botswana bush has a way of putting human beings firmly in their place, and sharing a landscape with a lions is one of the more effective methods it employs to do so.

A SPECIAL PLACE... Kubu Island rises out of the Sowa Pan like something from a fever dream, a rocky outcrop crowned with ancient baobabs so gnarled and otherworldly that the place feels less like a geographical feature and more like a visitation from another time entirely.

This is one of Botswana's most surreal and sacred landscapes, a site of deep spiritual significance to the San people and a place where the silence has a texture and weight to it that is unlike anywhere else on earth. At full moon, when the pan reflects the light and the baobabs cast their shadows across the white salt crust, Kubu becomes genuinely hallucinatory in the best possible sense.

For Nxai Stay guests venturing out from Zoroga Expedition Camp and Nxai Explore travellers on mobile expedition or self-driving through the Makgadikgadi, this is a place that's truly special, leaving them quietly convinced they've witnessed something that defies easy explanation.

A HIDDEN GEM... A day at Zoroga Expedition Camp has a rhythm that feels nothing like ordinary life and everything like the version of it you've always suspected existed somewhere. It begins with a hearty breakfast and moves into the Makgadikgadi with a guide who reads this landscape the way most people read a book, fluently and with genuine pleasure.

The pans stretch out in every direction, vast and luminous and shifting with the light, the birdlife extraordinary, the silence profound. By the time the sun drops towards that famous Kalahari horizon, and the evening fire is being coaxed into life back at camp, the outside world has receded to a point where it feels, quite honestly, like someone else's problem.

ANCIENT LIFEFORMS... The Baines Baobabs have been standing on the edge of the Kudiakam Pan since long before anyone thought to paint them, photograph them or write about them, which the great explorer and artist Thomas Baines did in 1862 and which people have been doing with varying degrees of success ever since.

These seven ancient trees, clustered together in a configuration so painterly it looks deliberately composed, are among the most iconic natural landmarks in Botswana and one of those rare places that manages to be even more extraordinary in person than in the thousands of images that preceded your arrival.

Both Nxai Stay guests at Zoroga Expedition Camp and Nxai Explore mobile expedition and self-drive travellers passing through the Makgadikgadi find their way here, and rightly so.

ELEPHANTS IN THE DUST... There is a particular kind of magic that happens when a herd of elephant moves through the late afternoon light of a Botswana sunset, the dust rising around them in great amber clouds, the whole scene backlit and ancient and completely indifferent to the fact that whoever is watching will remember it for the rest of their lives.

Botswana holds some of the largest elephant populations on the continent and knowing where to position yourself for encounters like this, at the right time of year, in the right landscape, with the right guide reading the land around you, is a knowledge that takes years to accumulate. Nxai DMC has done that accumulation on your behalf and puts it entirely at your disposal.

WELLNESS ON THE WILD SIDE... There are yoga studios, and then there is a mat rolled out at dawn on the edge of the Ntwetwe Pan with nothing in front of you but 3,000 square kilometres of pure, uninterrupted silence. Nxai Explore's wilderness yoga retreats are based at Zoroga Expedition Camp in the heart of the Makgadikgadi, where the stillness alone does more restorative work than a month of studio sessions ever could.
