In the 1950s Wenela Francistown etched its name in aviation history with the finest air safety record in the world.

For 17 remarkable years Wenela airline operated from Francistown transporting around 100,000 passengers annually to and from the Gauteng gold mines.

With a fleet of four DC4s and four Dakotas, Wenela flew passengers safely. Its DC4s could carry 90 passengers each.

When not in service the aircraft were housed in Francistown's Wenela airfield, boasting the biggest single open hanger in Southern Africa.

Wenela's Francistown airfield was unquestionably the best in Botswana with its long tarmac runway.

A testament to aviation excellence in a bygone era.
