Over the past few weeks, we have shared some of the reasons we love this place. Some were big, some were small, some were familiar. Some simply reminded us to notice what has always been around us.

And now we arrive at 60, not because the list is complete, but because after sixty reasons…there is still so much more to love about Botswana!

Tomorrow, Botswana celebrates 60 years of independence. 🇧🇼

We’ve now come to something that has shaped how many people experience this country: restraint.

There are still places here that ask you to slow down. Places where fewer people, more time and access to nature can feel like the greatest luxury of all.

Botswana has long chosen a tourism approach that values protecting wilderness from overcrowding. This is also part of its character, a country that does not always feel the need to announce itself loudly. You simply have to come and experience it for yourself.

As Botswana turns 60, today we are celebrating one of the things that makes this country absolutely remarkable: water.

The way the Okavango waters arrive in the middle of the dry season. Moving quietly through Delta channels by mokoro. The Chobe River at sunset. Watching elephants enjoy the river on a hot afternoon. The way water completely changes Botswana’s landscape…! Surely water gives this country some of its most unforgettable scenes, and some of its most beautiful contrasts.

Living with wildlife is part of Botswana’s story.

For generations, communities have shared these landscapes with wild animals. Local experts learn to read tracks most of us would walk straight past. The longer you spend in the bush, the more you begin to notice, a footprint, a sound, a broken branch, movement in the distance. And somewhere in that experience comes a simple reminder: we are visitors in their home.

Wildlife, among many other things, is one of the reasons we love Botswana.

Here wildlife is not contained to a single view or moment. Think of the elephants of Chobe. Red lechwe grazing in the floodplains. Zebra moving across open landscape. Giraffes slipping quietly between the mopane trees.

What is beautiful the most is knowing that wildlife still move through vast natural spaces, freely.

Some places feel unfamiliar the moment you arrive. Others surprise you with a sense of recognition…

One of our recent guests described their first time in Botswana this way:

“We travelled for three days to the other side of the world, and what I encountered there was not so much a ‘foreign culture’ or ‘foreign people,’ but a rhythm and an atmosphere that somehow felt strangely familiar.”

Perhaps that is one of the quieter surprises of travel. You can arrive somewhere thousands of kilometres from home and still find something that feels familiar.

Makgadikgadi has a way of making everything feel vast.
The salt pans seem to stretch without end. The horizon feels further away, and at night the sky takes over completely.

There is also the silence. The kind that makes you notice small things, a set of tracks in the dust, wildlife appearing where the landscape first seemed empty.

And perhaps that is part of what makes this place so special. It looks still, but there is always something happening if you stay long enough to notice.
