Eye to Eye in the Impenetrable 🦍🌿

Field notes from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda.

We pushed through mud, vines, and the dense green of Bwindi, and then there they were. A quiet giant was watching from the undergrowth. Another rested with its head on a mossy log, and one gave a huge, lazy yawn. Behind them all, the rest of the family moved softly through the leaves.

You cannot rehearse this kind of moment. You can only be there for it.

Home base was Pearl Valley Golf Resort Estates, tucked into the Cape Winelands with mountains on every side. Mornings started on those immaculate fairways, with crisp air, perfect greens and some seriously good swings (we won't say whose drives went furthest 😉).

Table Mountain gave us the full show: the "tablecloth" of cloud spilling over the cliffs while we stood above it all. Back in the Winelands, the vines were just waking up in spring green under those dramatic peaks. We walked through cool, quiet barrel cellars, lingered over a long tasting table, and somewhere between the reds and the whites, strangers became friends.

Thank you for the laughter, the stories and the company. Africa isn't done with you yet. 🧡

One hour with a silverback. 🦍

We set off into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest before the mist had lifted. We had ponchos on and trackers ahead, and stepped off the trail into the green. Then, through the fog, he appeared. Calm, watchful and completely at home. Just beyond him, a younger gorilla was rolling in the leaves with its feet in the air, without a care in the world.

Nearly half of the world’s mountain gorillas live in this forest, and every visit is limited to one precious hour. It’s an hour you carry with you for the rest of your life.

They all turned to look at us at once…

Rain falling, grass glowing green, and a whole herd of Cape buffalo stopping to stare at us. Not one of them blinked. Did we? Not a chance. 😅

This is Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, and it doesn’t do “quiet” sightings.

He stopped on the trail, looked straight at us… and said hello.

Some wildlife moments you watch. This one watched us.

Deep in Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda, our group had been following the calls through the forest all morning. Then this big fellow stepped onto the path right in front of us. He paused, turned and gave us a long, curious look with his mouth open mid-call. For a few seconds nobody moved. Nobody even reached for a camera, at first. 😄

Kibale is called the Primate Capital of the World. It's home to around 1,500 wild chimpanzees and over a dozen primate species. Trekking here isn't a zoo visit. It's stepping quietly into their world, on their terms.

Sound ON. That's a pant-hoot, the call chimpanzees use to check in with each other across Kibale Forest, Uganda.

Kibale is known as the Primate Capital of the World, with around 1,500 wild chimpanzees. Watch them long enough and you'll see why they're called our closest relatives.
