This route takes you through five of Botswana’s great wilderness areas - Okavango Delta, Moremi, Khwai, Savuti and Chobe.

Expect mokoro journeys in the western Delta, game drives through Moremi and Khwai, time in Savuti’s predator country, and a final stretch along the Chobe River.

Birding in the Delta has taught me to slow down.

Many guests arrive looking for lions, leopards and elephants. I understand that. But after a few days in the Okavango, they start noticing the smaller things. The kingfishers above the channels. The bee-eaters catching insects in the morning light. The fish eagle calling over the water.

They show you where the water is moving. They tell you when something is changing. Sometimes they even lead you to a sighting before you have seen any tracks.

The Delta is full of calls, colour and movement. You just have to give it your attention.

An evening on a mokoro is one of the quietest ways to understand the Delta.

At that time of day, everything changes. The heat starts to lift. The water turns gold. The birds begin to settle, and the channels become very still.

I like this time because guests stop talking without anyone asking them to. They start listening. To the water against the mokoro. To the frogs. To the call of a fish eagle somewhere in the distance.

You are not chasing sightings out there. You are moving slowly through the Delta as the day closes around you.

For me, sunset on a mokoro is not just an activity. It is one of the best ways to feel why this place is so special. ~ MG

I have watched hippos in Moremi for many years, and they still command my respect every time I see them.

People often think of them as slow, heavy animals sitting in the water. But in the Delta, you learn quickly that a hippo is always aware. They know their channels, they know their space, and they know when something has come too close.

I have seen them surface quietly beside a mokoro. I have seen bulls open their mouths in warning, not because they want trouble, but because they are telling you clearly where the line is. A good guide listens to that.

In Moremi, hippos are part of the rhythm of the water. You hear them before sunrise, you see them in the channels during the day, and you fall asleep with their calls carrying through camp at night.

That is the Delta. Wild, alive, and never something to take for granted.

August in the bush is dry, clear and full of movement.

The floodwaters are still up in the Okavango, and the animals are staying close to the channels, pans and river systems. Tracks are easier to read. Visibility is good. The mornings are cold, but the sightings can be exceptional.

This is peak dry season safari.

Expect early starts, warm afternoons, quiet evenings around camp, and game drives that can change in a matter of seconds.
