6.11 am. Engine off. Just the silence of nature at dawn.

Two cheetahs are stretched out across the track and have decided that the world can wait.

They’re right. Without saying a word, we stood there for nearly twenty minutes before they decided to leave. Sometimes, the best moments of a safari aren’t the dramatic scenes, but lie in the calm that precedes nature’s awakening.

In fact, these are always our favourite moments.

And yet, when you stand here, listening to the sounds of the bush, breathing in the scent of sage, watching some happy hippos… you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, would you?

Just a few words are enough to capture the full emotional impact of a safari. Sophie and Elise enjoyed the most successful private mobile safari of the year so far! Wildlife was everywhere in Moremi Game Reserve (yes, despite the limited number of accessible tracks due to the annual floods) and in Chobe National Park. They savoured every moment spent in the bush. Thank you for sharing some of your incredible sightings with us 💛

In the Okavango Delta, it’s not always the depth of a water crossing that matters. Always try to check whether the ground is firm or soft before setting off, otherwise you risk getting stuck in the mud for hours and badly damaging your vehicle.

Despite our best efforts, we never managed to get this 4x4 out of the water. But thanks to the teams at Xakanaxa, everyone was eventually able to reach the camp in the evening and sleep in the dry 😅

Xomae has announced that Third Bridge is open again, thanks to a new dry road that they have bravely built from Xakanaxa, passing by the airstrip and going around the Sitshi Pools👏😁

The trickiest part is the two water crossings on the road between Xini and Xakanaxa, but otherwise, it is an easy drive if you don't mind the scratches (and we don't!).

Please note that the safari tracks are limited within the reserve and water is still rising... To be continued 😉

Understanding the Okavango Delta is essential when going on a self-drive safari. Above, you’ll find a series of images taken in late May, from 2017 to 2026. It shows how much conditions can vary from one year to the next at exactly the same period.

Don’t forget that the Okavango Delta is a dynamic ecosystem and that it is unpredictable. That is also what makes it so magical. Drive safely and enjoy the spectacular scenery!
