The Great White Pelican’s huge, long bill/beak is used to scoop up fish from the water. The pouch under the beak is stretchy and can hold several litres of water. As the Pelican pushes its bill underwater, the lower bill bows out, creating a large pouch which fills with water and fish. As the bird lifts its head, the pouch contracts, forcing out the water but retaining the fish which are swallowed whole. .photography

Have you ever ever doubted tales about Phika, the devilish serpent? Well, maybe some of the tales were too exaggerated but snake experts have confirmed that the legendary 'phika' does exist.
Various Botswana cultures are littered with myths about this creature. Amongst the locals, phika is simply explained as that mysterious, all powerful snake with magical powers. It is associated with spiritual beings, and generally all Batswana concur that the phika is untouchable and mysterious.

This is the twig/vine snake, one of the 8 dangerous snakes in BOTSWANA.
Twig snakes are among the few rear-fanged colubrids whose bite is highly venomous and potentially fatal. The venom is hemotoxic, and although its effects are very slow, and bites are rare.

The African leopard (Panthera pardus) is an elegant and powerfully-built predator. It is the most secretive and elusive big cat, and arguably one of the most beautiful members of the entire Panthera genus.
Because of its adapted retinas, leopards can see seven times better in the dark than humans.
Leopards are spectacular hunters! Not only are they quite fast and can run up to 58km/h, but are also famous for their incredible agility and strength to climb trees while dragging a kill that is sometimes heavier than their own body weight.

SOUTHERN WHITE FACED SCOPS OWL

The White Faced Scops Owl has been renamed the Southern White-Faced Scops Owl (Ptilopsis granti). It belongs to the family Strigidae

Owls in the Strigidae family all have facial discs which act as “satellite dishes”, amplifying and channeling sound directly to their ears. This enables them to hear the slightest sound of potential prey.

These nocturnal owls are very well known for their ability to “transform” their shape. If alarmed they have a unique way of escaping detection; they can elongate their bodies and contract their plumage, making themselves taller and thinner.

COMMON / BLUE WILDEBEEST (GNU)

The Blue Wildebeest belongs to the family Bovidae and more importantly the tribe Alcelaphini.

Found only in Africa this tribe reached its peak about 2 million years ago when there were over 8 genera with at least 15 different species which has now been reduced to only 7 species and 3 genera, however it does remain one of the most numerous and widely distributed bovid tribes.

Wildebeest spend on average 53% of their time resting (32% lying down and 21% standing) this includes ruminating, 33% of their time is spent grazing and 12% walking and only 1 – 1.5% of their time in social interactions.

The Blue Wildebeest is also often called the Brindled Gnu, this is because of its coloration. It has dark bands over its shoulders and flanks which give it a brindled appearance. The Gnu term refers to its call, a Gnuuu Gnuuu sound.
