Each year, Ethical Traveler, an initiative of the non-profit Earth Island Institute, undertakes a comprehensive study of developing nations to compile a list of the world's most inviting and progressive destinations. The organization emphasizes policies and practices that promote human rights, environmental protection, social welfare, and animal rights. Their research methodology incorporates a wide array of reputable sources, including Amnesty International and UNICEF.

Established in 2003, Ethical Traveler serves as a global alliance of individuals who are passionate about travel and are committed to responsible tourism. The organization seeks to leverage the economic power of tourism to foster environmental protection and social responsibility, while also educating travelers about the consequences of their actions and inspiring them to "vote with their wings."

Ethical Traveler is honored to recognize Botswana for its achievements and the significant progress made in recent years. The organization encourages readers to explore the section dedicated to Botswana to understand the rationale behind its selection as one of the winners for 2025. Furthermore, they hope that stakeholders will consider the modest recommendations provided, as they strive for ongoing progress in their winning countries. Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Northeast of Africa’s Kalahari Desert and southeast of the Okavango Delta lies one of the largest salt pans in the world. It was once the site of one of the largest inland seas on Earth.

On June 10, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. The collection of salt flats covers roughly 30,000 square kilometers (10,000 square miles) amidst desert and dry savanna in Botswana. Located in Makgadikgadi National Park and Nxai Pan National Park, the salt pans are rivaled in extent only by the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia.

For much of the year, the salt pans glimmer in white, parched by the sun and the salt and allowing little more than algae to grow. But during the rainy season (roughly November to March), the area can be transformed into a crucial wetland. Water can flow in from the Boteti and Nata rivers, filling ephemeral ponds, watering holes, and shallow lakes and creating short-lived but abundant grasslands. The event draws migrating wildebeest and zebras, as well as the predators that hunt them. The waters fill with ducks, geese, pelicans, and flamingos—one of just two breeding spots in southern Africa for the long-legged birds.

The pans are the salty remains of ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. Scientists estimate that the inland sea once spanned anywhere from 80,000 to 275,000 square kilometers. The Okavango, Zambezi, and Cuando rivers likely emptied into this lake until tectonic shifts changed the elevation of the landscape and a changing climate dried up the rains.

The dark-toned lines of forest in Botswana’s Okavango inland delta are prominent against the tan landscape. The rivers are fed by wetter regions to the north in Angola and Zambia. The Okavango River loses most of its water in the inland delta. Overflow occasionally reaches the Makgadikgadi salt flats (lower left of the image). The Zambezi and Cuando rivers reach the Indian Ocean after plunging over the Victoria Falls—a feature that has been photographed before by orbiting astronauts.

The image shows a large swath of territory from Victoria Falls on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border (lower right) to the cloud-covered Atlantic Ocean (upper left). For a sense of scale, the white salt of Etosha Pan, a dry lake, lies 960 km (600 miles) from Victoria Falls.

Smoke plumes from numerous fires in southern Angola mark the burning of savanna vegetation, which is typically comprised of grass and scattered trees. Rainfall is higher in the vegetated regions of southern Angola than farther south in Botswana’s semidesert where trees are less prolific. Fires are a normal occurrence in the dry season (winter) at the time of year this image was taken.

A field of bright, small cumulus clouds (also known as ‘popcorn cumulus’) over the valley of the Cuando River is visible in the upper right of the image. Cumulus clouds often form under conditions of sufficient local moisture in the air, combined with midday heating.

The cloud pattern over the Cuando River basin illustrates the commonly observed feature of a cloud free line tracing the course of a river. This line reflects a zone of cooler air directly above the river where cloud development is suppressed—at least on days with little wind. Similar cloud free zones above rivers can be seen in astronaut photos along the Congo River and the Rio Negro in the Amazon basin.
