This Labour Day, we celebrate dedication, growth, and the people who make Bush Ways what it is.

Since joining Bush Ways in 2000, Aupa Diteko Nkomazana, popularly known as DT, has built a journey defined by commitment, passion, and perseverance. He began as a camp assistant/chef, later worked as a workshop assistant, and all the while carried a growing love for nature and the wilderness.

Inspired by the guides around him, he chose to study, train, and pursue his dream of becoming a safari guide. That dream became reality, and he has been guiding ever since.

His story is a reminder that growth comes from passion, hard work, and the courage to keep learning. Fittingly, his favourite animal is the wild dog, admired for its teamwork and care:

“I love their social structure, it’s amazing how they support each other. For instance if one is ill or weak the rest of the pack nurse it back to health.”

Today, we honour his journey and the spirit of resilience it represents.

On Hyena Day, it feels only right to celebrate the animal that has been part of Bush Ways from the very beginning.

Thirty years ago, when Bush Ways Safaris was founded, Marc chose the hyena as our logo. While many safari brands leaned toward lions or elephants, he wanted something different, an animal that deserved more recognition.

For him, the connection was personal. Early in his guiding days, he had the rare privilege of watching a clan of spotted hyenas grow from tiny pups into sub-adults. What he saw was an animal that was intelligent, complex, powerful, social, and completely captivating.

Hyenas are among Africa’s most misunderstood predators. Often underestimated, they are in fact skilled hunters, important ecosystem players, and one of the wild’s most fascinating animals.

Thirty years on, the hyena still stands proudly on our logo, and now on our anniversary logo too, a symbol of the authentic, resilient, and different spirit that Bush Ways has carried from the start.

Here’s to 30 years of authentic safaris and making dreams come true.
