BUSH WAYS 30 | 2017 - BOTETI RIVER CAMP

As we celebrate 30 years of Bush Ways, we revisit Boteti River Camp, our fourth property and a gateway to a different side of Botswana.

Set along the Boteti River, on the edge of Makgadikgadi National Park, the camp offers a unique blend of desert landscapes, local culture and the spectacular seasonal zebra migration.

This year brought something special, as floodwaters from the Okavango Delta made their way down the Boteti River, breathing new life into the landscape.

From our first tracks in 1996 to the banks of the Boteti River in 2017, the journey has always been about sharing the real Botswana.

Some places grow, but never lose what made them special.

As we celebrate 30 years of Bush Ways, we look back at the journey of Khwai Guest House, from its early beginnings to the welcoming safari home it is today.

Opened in 2015, Khwai Guest House became our third permanent property and another important chapter in the Bush Ways story. Over the years, the camp has grown and evolved, but its heart has remained the same an authentic connection between people, community and wilderness.

Located within the traditional Khwai Village, along the edge of the Khwai River and neighbouring Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Guest House places you right where village life and the wild meet.

Here, your days can take you out on game drives in search of Botswana’s incredible wildlife, gliding quietly through the Delta on a mokoro, or simply enjoying the slower rhythm of life in Khwai.

Blue, black and white. One team, a shared table, and so much to celebrate. 🇧🇼

As Botswana marks 60 years of independence, our Bush Ways team came together over lunch, wearing our national colours with pride and celebrating the country we call home.

The black and white of our flag symbolise racial harmony, people of different races living together in peace and mutual respect. Around our table, we celebrate that spirit of togetherness, a spirit that also gives meaning to the work we do in tourism.

Every safari brings people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds together. We share stories, learn from one another and discover connections that reach beyond language or where we come from. Through these encounters, our guests come to know Botswana through both its extraordinary wilderness and the people who call it home.

As we celebrate this milestone, we honour the generations who have shaped our nation and our shared responsibility to carry that spirit forward.

Tourism in Botswana is more than movement from one place to another. It is the connection between people, wildlife, wilderness and the communities that protect and live alongside it.

It is the first light over the bush, the silence of the Delta, the stories shared by guides, the culture carried through generations, and the privilege of seeing wildlife where it belongs, wild and free.

Tourism is also conservation. It gives value to protecting these landscapes, supporting communities and ensuring that the experiences we enjoy today can still exist tomorrow.

FROM MOVING CAMPS TO PUTTING DOWN ROOTS

Since 1996, the Bush Ways story has been one of movement. Mobile safaris, long roads, changing landscapes and camps that travelled with the journey.

Then, in 2010, something changed.

Sango Safari Camp came along.

Opening our first permanent camp in the Khwai region was a big step for Bush Ways. After years of moving with the wilderness, we were putting down a few roots of our own.

It gave guests a place to return to. A place with its own rhythm, its own memories and its own place in the growing Bush Ways story.

And as Sango opened the door to permanent camps and lodge-based experiences, one thing never changed:
The bush still had to come first.

Sango was never meant to take guests away from the wilderness. It was about bringing them closer to it. To the sounds at night. The early mornings. The wildlife passing through. The feeling of being part of the landscape rather than simply looking at it.

And perhaps that is what made Sango so special. It was the first step in a new chapter, without leaving the old one behind.

Sixteen years later, as we celebrate 30 years of Bush Ways, Sango Safari Camp remains part of where that chapter began.

18 YEARS OF COUNTLESS JOURNEYS & WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE PASSED ON

Meet Wendy, 18 years into the Bush Ways clan, and still the person who makes sure a safari runs the way it's meant to.

As our Senior Reservations Administration Officer, Wendy works hand-in-hand with the Operations team, supporting every logistical detail that goes into a safari once it's booked.

She remembers working from a small building downtown. Long before Bush Ways became what it is today.

Over the years, Wendy has helped shape, support and develop the reservations staff who now form part of our team, passing on knowledge built over nearly two decades in the safari industry.

Wendy's story reflects what it means to be part of the clan: "It takes a clan to make great safari happen."

"I am truly grateful to Bush Ways Safaris for the opportunities for growth and development I have received over the years."

As we celebrate 30 years of Bush Ways, we celebrate people like Wendy, proof that experience means nothing without the willingness to pass it on.

From scullery to front of house, Angie Shamuka’s journey is part of the Bush Ways story.

Angie joined Chobe Elephant Camp in 2013, the same year the camp opened. She started as a scullery worker, later worked in housekeeping, and today she is part of the front of house team, one of the warm and cheerful faces guests meet during their stay.

Over the years, Angie has grown with the camp, learning different roles, building her confidence with guests and becoming what she proudly describes as an all-rounder.

“Chobe Elephant Camp taught me the industry, raised and elevated me from a young age.”

Her story is a reminder of what long service can mean beyond the number of years. It is about growth, opportunity, experience and the confidence that comes from being given room to learn.

As Bush Ways celebrates 30 years, we celebrate people like Angie who have grown with us and continue to encourage others to work towards their own goals.

Since 2013, still growing, still welcoming, still part of the Bush Ways journey.
