Despite what many people think, polar bears don't actually hibernate like other bear species.
Instead, they enter a state often referred to as "walking hibernation" during the ice-free months. After building up their fat reserves during seal hunting season, polar bears rely on that stored energy to sustain them throughout the summer and fall.
While they can go for extended periods without eating, polar bears are also opportunistic feeders. If the opportunity arises, they may feed on beluga whales, birds and their eggs, berries, kelp, or small mammals such as s*k s*ks.
Their ability to store energy and make use of different food sources helps them survive until the sea ice returns and seal hunting season begins again.
Were you surprised to learn that polar bears don't hibernate?
