๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ Travelling to Mexico with children? Thereโ€™s an important change on the horizon!

Mexico is moving forward with new legislation that could change what families need to provide when checking into hotels and resorts with children under 18.

The purpose of this legislation is to help protect children from trafficking and exploitation by requiring accommodations to verify the relationship between minors and the adults travelling with them.

So, what does this mean for families planning a trip to Mexico?

On October 7, 2026, Mexicoโ€™s Senate approved legislation that would require hotels and other tourist accommodations to verify that adults travelling with minors are their parents, legal guardians, or otherwise have the legal authority to accompany them.

This would be a nationwide requirement, not something limited to Cancun, Riviera Maya, or other popular tourist destinations.

When does this take effect?

Thatโ€™s the big question, and right now, we donโ€™t have an official date.

The legislation has been sent to the federal executive for the next steps, and weโ€™re still waiting for official publication and confirmation of when the new requirements will begin.

What should families do in the meantime?

My recommendation is to be prepared, particularly if youโ€™re travelling with children who arenโ€™t accompanied by both parents.

A few documents worth considering bringing along:

โœˆ๏ธ Birth certificates: A copy of each childโ€™s long-form birth certificate showing their parentsโ€™ names.

โœˆ๏ธ Custody or guardianship documents: If applicable, copies of any relevant legal documentation.

โœˆ๏ธ Parental consent letters: Particularly important for children travelling with grandparents, extended family, family friends, or only one parent. A notarized letter may be worth considering depending on your circumstances.

A little clarification!

These are precautionary recommendations, NOT a confirmed list of documents that Mexico will require under the new legislation.

Weโ€™re still waiting for details about which documents will be accepted, whether copies will be sufficient, and whether notarization or translations will be necessary.

These potential hotel check-in requirements are also separate from the existing passport and immigration requirements for travelling internationally.

The bottom line?

If youโ€™ve got a family vacation to Mexico coming up, thereโ€™s no need to panic or start scrambling for paperwork just yet.

This legislation is still working through the final stages, and there are important details that havenโ€™t been confirmed.

Iโ€™m starting to think my husband is worried Iโ€™m going to pack my bags and move to Ireland. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Perhaps Iโ€™ve been talking about it a ๐’๐’Š๐’•๐’•๐’๐’† too much since getting home. So yesterday, he decided to take me for a drive through my favourite part of Nova Scotia, the Annapolis Valley.

Iโ€™m pretty sure his goal was to remind me why I still want to be a Canadian citizen. And I must admit, he understood the assignment.

Gorgeous fall colours, sunshine, little markets, some treats and scenery that never gets old.

Itโ€™s funny how we can travel halfway around the world and fall in love with somewhere new, only to come home and be reminded just how beautiful our own backyard really is.

Good morning travel fam! Iโ€™m home from Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ€

After walking approximately 4,797,284,984 steps and drinking an equal amount of Guinness, I think itโ€™s safe to say I need a little recovery time. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Iโ€™ve been on and off sleeping since I got home yesterday afternoon, and Iโ€™m slowly making my way back to the land of the living! Alas, it's now back to reality. I have a TON of emails, messages and travel requests waiting for me, so the next few days will be spent getting caught up on everything.

A little check-in from Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Weโ€™re more than halfway through our trip and Ireland has absolutely won my heart.

Itโ€™s been exhausting, emotional, hilarious and honestly a little bit magical. Weโ€™ve seen some incredible places, laughed A LOT, walked approximately 47 million steps, drank our fair share of Guinness, and I finally got to see- and feed- the sheep. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

There have been a few moments on this trip that have caught me completely off guard too. The kind that make you stop for a second, take it all in and realize just how lucky you are to be standing where you are.

Today weโ€™re off to see the Cliffs of Moher, and I am SO excited for this one.

Something tells me Ireland isnโ€™t quite done with me yet. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช
