Jamaica isn't one trip — it's three, and the resort you choose decides which one you get. Here's the honest version from someone who books it from Halifax and Moncton.

Negril: barefoot and bohemian. Seven Mile Beach, reggae bars on the sand, and cliff-jumping at the West End. The slowest, most laid-back pace on the island.

Montego Bay: the gateway. The shortest transfer from the airport, championship golf, a buzzing Hip Strip, and the easiest base for first-timers.

Ocho Rios: adventure. Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole, rainforest ziplining, and the lush north coast.

Same island — but pick the wrong base and you'll spend an hour-plus in the car to reach what you actually came for. That's the part a booking engine can't do. I match the town to how you want to travel, then the right resort inside it — and on many properties I can add perks like resort credits, breakfast, and upgrades.

Five things I check before recommending any resort to a client. Things no booking engine will ever show you.

One: Monarc reviews. Most people have never heard of it, but Monarc is a verified review platform specific to Canadian package travel. I read every recent review for any resort I recommend. It is more reliable than TripAdvisor for the kind of trips I book from Halifax and Moncton.

Two: beach quality. Not every 4-star resort has a great beach. This is the one thing you cannot upgrade once you arrive. I check it specifically because it is the factor most travellers overlook until they are standing on a disappointing shoreline.

Three: food program. This is where resorts lose people. I look at review patterns around dining, specifically the a la carte restaurants, not just the buffet or the overall food rating. A resort can score 4 stars overall and still have a mediocre food program.

Four: resort size and layout. Big is not always better. A large resort can mean 15-minute walks to the beach, crowded pools, and impersonal service. I match the size to the traveller, not the marketing photos.

Five: recent advisor intel. Travel forums and the Fora advisor network share real-time feedback on properties. If a resort just renovated and it is better than ever, I know. If a resort is having a bad month with service issues, I know that too, before I recommend it to you. This is the part most clients never see.

Last week I turned down three resorts before I found one I would actually recommend for a family booking March Break. That process is invisible to the client. They just see the final recommendation. But the work behind it is what makes the difference between a good trip and a great one.
