Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for a woman… is get rid of her.
Not in anger.
Not in frustration.
But in love.
A local inn owner recently told me a story he’ll never forget. He had resigned himself to a quiet winter—no bookings, no surprises. Shoulder season had settled in, and the grand old house was going to sit empty.
Then the phone rang.
On the other end was a husband who was deeply worried about his wife.
She had been carrying an enormous amount—personal loss layered with family strain, sleepless nights, and the relentless demands of children who still needed her no matter how exhausted she was. She was running on fumes, barely sleeping, holding it all together out of sheer will. The kind of woman who would never book rest for herself. Who couldn’t be convinced she deserved it. So he didn’t ask.
He quietly arranged for one of his parents to come stay with him and help with the kids. He worked with the inn owner to curate a fully taken-care-of stay—even though the inn didn’t technically offer “all-inclusive” packages. Meals. Comfort. Privacy. Zero decisions.
Because it was the off-season, she would have the entire historic mansion to herself.
On a winter morning, she woke up to a simple surprise: a printed driving map to the inn—just a few hours away. No flights. No logistics. No mental load. Everything was already handled. For a full week. All she had to do was drive.
Imagine realizing that for the next several days, your only responsibilities are sleeping until your body says stop, eating well, reading, watching Netflix in bed, and letting your nervous system finally exhale.
Imagine knowing your children are safe, in their own beds, cared for by grandparents who love them. No guilt. No scrambling. No negotiations.
Imagine what it feels like to be that seen.
That’s not just a getaway.
That’s care.
That’s love expressed through planning, thoughtfulness, and timing.
And for hospitality owners wondering how to reach guests in the shoulder season—this is just a glimpse of what’s possible when we stop marketing “rooms” and start understanding moments.
This is the kind of story, depth, and insight we’ll be exploring in the Wandering Women: North of 50 magazine launching this March—designed to help destinations, innkeepers, and partners understand how women actually rest… and how the people who love them often make that rest possible.
Sometimes the most meaningful gift isn’t jewellery or a trip far away.
Sometimes it’s space.
Silence.
And the grace of being sent somewhere safe to fall apart—and come back whole.
