TUESDAY, AUG. 26 ~ SAVE THE DATE ~ mapannapolis is celebrating 13 years of uncovering and preserving history at Fort Anne National Historic Site. DON'T MISS THIS very special MAPANNAPOLIS REVEALED event, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Fort Anne National Historic Site, 323 St. George Street, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia.
Teaming up with Parks Canada Halifax, this is a fascinating opportunity to learn through interactive exhibits about the incredible work that the organization has done over the past 13 years to uncover and preserve Annapolis County’s history, culture and heritage — including the reveal of stone markings to commemorate and outline a centuries-old burial ground within the Garrison Graveyard.
Mapannapolis, a volunteer-led and community-based non-profit organization, has been working closely with a variety of organizations since 2012 to tell the hidden stories of the Annapolis region, from mapping 18th-century Black Loyalist settlements to creating the definitive map of the Garrison Graveyard at Fort Anne National Historic Site. This special day showcases the many projects they have worked on at Fort Anne — and throughout the region — to bring history alive.
This event will also coincide with the reveal of one of Mapannapolis’s most recent efforts, What Lies Beneath: An Acadian Ancestry Project, which shares the findings of years of work — including ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data — to uncover what archaeologists believe to be the original burial ground at Fort Anne National Historic Site.
Join in the fun of a choose-your-own-adventure-style event and connect with a variety of experts and community organizations to learn about the diverse history of the Annapolis region:
- Discover what lies underground and take in a ground-penetrating radar demonstration.
- Learn about ongoing restoration and conservation efforts in the Garrison Graveyard.
- Learn more about archaeological work taking place at Fort Anne National Historic Site by viewing a live excavation, as well as a variety of artifacts that have been found in the ground over the years.
- See the results of the Standing Stones project to commemorate the original burial ground within the Garrison Graveyard.
- Tour Fort Anne National Historic Site and learn all about its rich history, from the earliest Mi’kmaw presence to the arrivals of French and English colonists and the conflicts that followed between them.
