🚢 Ketchikan on a Budget: The Best FREE Things to Do!
Headed to the "Salmon Capital of the World" but want to save your souvenir money? You don’t need a pricey excursion to experience the best of Ketchikan! Here are some top picks for a perfect free port day:
*Stroll through Historic Creek Street.
This iconic boardwalk built on stilts over the water is a must-see. It was once the city’s red-light district, but today it’s filled with colorful shops and incredible views. Look for the "Married Man’s Trail" at the end for a scenic wooded walk!
*Watch the Salmon Run.
Head to the Salmon Ladder near the end of Creek Street. During the summer months, you can watch thousands of salmon fighting their way upstream. It’s nature’s most intense workout, and watching it is totally free!
*Totem Pole Treasure Hunt.
Ketchikan has the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles. While some parks charge admission, you can see many beautiful, authentic poles for free just by walking around downtown. Don’t miss the Chief Johnson Totem Pole near the center of town!
*Visit Whale Park.
A quick walk from the docks, this little park is a great spot to sit, enjoy the harbor views, and see the Ketchikan Welcome Arch. It’s also a prime spot for eagle-spotting—keep your eyes on the treetops!
*Self-Guided Walking Tour.
Swing by the Visitor’s Bureau (the big building right on the pier) and grab a free walking tour map. It guides you through the historic downtown and the "West End," showing you the best photo ops without spending a dime.
Pro Tip: If your legs get tired, look for the Free Downtown Shuttle. It runs in a loop every 20 minutes and hits most of the major sights near the port!
