This meet some of Newfoundland’s returning visitors! 🐋
Thanks to our new partnership with Happywhale, we now use their Whale ID technology to identify individual humpback whales in just seconds… all we need is a clear photo of the underside of the fluke!
Yesterday, while watching four humpbacks feeding off the Newfoundland coast, we snapped a fluke photo and got an exciting surprise. One of the whales was an unnamed individual (NA-6738) first documented right here in this exact area back in 2013. Since then, it has been spotted on the breeding grounds in Silver Bank, Dominican Republic, and was last recorded in Newfoundland in 2019. After a seven-year gap, it appears this whale has made a return visit to our waters!
Every humpback tail is unique—like a fingerprint—and every sighting helps researchers better understand whale migration, behaviour, and population health.
We’re also proud contributors to Newfoundland and Labrador’s Hello Humpback program, helping build a growing catalogue of the whales that visit our stunning coastline every summer.
Who knows? Maybe the next humpback we identify will be another old friend 🐋💙
