We'd love to see you at our Career Expo this morning, at the Gvakva'aus Hailzaqv (Big House). Come learn about how tourism and training has helped strengthen other communities and find out what opportunities could be available here at home.
We're welcoming three special guests who will be sharing their experiences from their own communities:
-Chyanne Trenholm from Homalco (Special Guest Speaker)
"Chyanne Trenholm, a member of the Χʷomaɬkʷu (Homalco) First Nation in Campbell River, has built her career in service of her community and territory. She began with Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours as a summer student, welcoming visitors and sharing the stories, lands, and traditions of her Nation. After earning a Bachelor of Tourism Management with a Minor in Recreation from Vancouver Island University, she returned full-time, advancing through marketing and operations roles before becoming General Manager.
An emerging Indigenous leader in tourism, Chyanne brings both lived experience and professional expertise to her work. She serves as the Vancouver Island Regional Director on the Indigenous Tourism BC Board and Commercial Bear Viewing BC Board, ensuring regional voices are reflected in provincial decision-making and connecting board strategy with community realities.
Her leadership is collaborative and values-driven, grounded in cultural integrity, regenerative growth, and community well-being. She is committed to creating opportunities for Homalco members while strengthening connections to land, language, and culture. Chyanne also co-founded Nine Peaks Tree Care, a tree-service company, expanding Indigenous ownership into another sector. Across her work, she advances economic self-determination and demonstrates how tourism can support culture, protect lands, and build resilient futures."

-Maria Clark, TinWis (Special Guest Speaker)
"Maria Clark is from the ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ and ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ Nations and is dedicated to elevating Indigenous voices, values, and leadership within the tourism economy. Grounded in culture and community, her work focuses on building Nation-based business capacity and advancing economic self-determination. Through initiatives like Tin Wis 10 in 10, Maria supports Indigenous workforce development, leadership growth, and entrepreneurship. She is passionate about creating opportunities for future generations to thrive on their homelands and in their industries. Maria also contributes her expertise to regional and provincial tourism boards and advisory committees, while managing her own fabrication business on the coast. "

-New speaker, Justin, aka Jay, Darbyshire
Born on the coast and raised in the Kootenays Jay possesses a deep passion for exploring our shared physical and cultural landscape through outdoor recreation. He has been involved in the mountain bike industry for over 20 years through both employment and advocacy work. Coupled with his academic background in Adventure Tourism and International Tourism Development he carries a heavy toolbox packed with personal experiences and community recreation development strategies.

WorkBC is a free drop-in employment hub for people in the community who are figuring out their next step — whether that's finding a job, switching careers, upgrading their skills, or even starting their own business. We fall within their area for services!
-Also Jamie from CanScribe will have a booth and some great info!
Canscribe is a Canadian online career college based out of Kelowna, BC — built for people who need education to fit around their real life, not the other way around.
Their whole thing is flexibility. Everything is done online (with optional in-person components for some programs), which means you can train for a new career whether you're in a remote community, raising kids, already working, or just can't pick up and move to a city to go to school.
On top of the guest presentations, you'll get a look at upcoming training opportunities, current job openings, and there will be door prizes!
