Wed., September 23, 2026 - Day 11 of 12 - Woody Point & the Tablelands. This is one of my most favourite days as we explore this region on the West Coast of Newfoundland. It was a beautiful drive around Bonne Bay as we travelled through Gros Morne National Park on route 430. We turned West at Wiltondale onto route 431 and headed out to the Tablelands early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The views were spectacular and the fall colours were just starting. We made photo stops at the Tablelands, saw the provincial flower, The Pitcher Plant, some our group walked on the earth’s mantle for a short hike and we all took several photos of this unique landscape.Peridotite is the dominant rock of the upper part of Earth's mantle, giving it the rusty brown color. We travelled out to Trout River where we experienced the original form of “Online shopping” with Joy - a local resident. Then it was off to Woody Point for lunch. We were warmly greeted by Jenny & Stan Parsons, owners of the Merchant Warehouse. After lunch we headed upstairs to The Loft Theatre where we were entertained by Kendra Parsons & Paul Rumboldt in the musical performance of “Woody Point of View”. This hour-long show features storytelling, traditional songs, and visual elements, highlighting the special heritage of the region. In the afternoon we visited the Park’s Discovery Centre and watched the award winning film, before departing for Corner Brook, for our overnight stay at the beautiful Glynmill Inn. An evening group dinner was served upon arrival. It has been such an incredible day from start to finish. It started with Sharon Cole of Shallow Bay Motel telling us a few jokes before we departed. It has been a day filled with music, laughter, great food & breathtaking scenery.

Tuesday., September 22, 2026 - Day 10 of 12 - The first day of Fall. Today was a travel day as we retraced our journey south on Route 430. We woke to heavy rain that had moved into the region overnight, continuing from St. Anthony to Port aux Choix. However, the sun came out this afternoon, the winds picked up, and despite the +9°C, it felt much colder.
We drove to the Port Riche Lighthouse, hoping to see the small caribou herd that resides there, but they were nowhere to be found. The lighthouse has a unique “pepper pot” design—an octagonal pyramid wooden tower painted white with a red lantern room. Standing 62 feet tall, it was built in 1892 and remains active today, flashing a white light every five seconds. We enjoyed the views and the crashing waves at The Arches Provincial Park, which opened to the public in 1972. These three remaining arches were carved from the rock by thousands of years of crashing waves and erosion. There was a fourth arch, but it collapsed in the past 15 years. This evening, we’re staying at the Shallow Bay Motel in Cow Head. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of ribs or salmon, and were personally greeted by Darel House, the owner. It’s a popular family-run restaurant, motel, and bar located across from the Nurse Myra Bennett Theatre. (I posted a short video clip from under the Arches for your enjoyment. Mon., September 21, 2026 - Day 9 of 12. Today, we delved into the life and work of Sir Wilfred Grenfell, a doctor and missionary from England dedicated to providing medical care, hospitals, schools, orphanages, and social support to the people of St. Anthony and the Labrador Coast in the early 1900s. His former home has been preserved as a museum, and his legacy is showcased at the Grenfell Interpretative Centre. Flo Hughes-Hancock personally guided us through both sites, including the murals found in the rotunda of the Charles S. Curtis Hospital. (We shared a short video.) Cynthia Randall, the Centre’s Director, personally greeted us, assisted with lunch preparations, and even served customers in the gift shop. A lovely luncheon was enjoyed in the Lady Anne TeaRoom. This afternoon we stopped at the Dark Tickle Jam Company in St. Lunarie-Griquet. We were warmly welcomed by Kier who gave us a brief history of their family business. Then it was onto L’Anse aux Meadows UNESCO World Heritage Site on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula . It features the only authenticated Norse settlement in North America. I would encourage anyone visiting the centre to watch the 18 minute film. It beautifully connects the dots and explains the cultural significance of why the Vikings set up camps in this region. We had a private guided tour and explanation along the boardwalk that wove through the area of the covered mounds and then we visited with the costumed interpreters in the recreated base camp. Dinner was enjoyed at The Daily Catch Restaurant before returning to the hotel. Day 9 draws to a close and our moose sightings are still ZERO.

Sun., September 20, 2026, - Day 8 of 12 - following Route 430 from Rocky Harbour to St. Anthony. Today, we travelled along the scenic Viking Trail, enjoying sunny skies and breathtaking views of the ocean on our left and the mountains on our right for the first 240 kilometres.
Our first stop of the day was the Torrent River Salmon Interpretation Centre, where we met Angie Roberts. She’s a wealth of knowledge about salmon, river systems, the Torrent River fish ladder, moose hunting, and all things Newfoundland.
We had lunch at the Plum Point Motel, where many of our guests indulged in the traditional dish of Cod au Gratin before continuing our travels. Our next stop was the Fox Head Lighthouse in St. Anthony, where we watched the waves crash against the shore, creating a truly awe-inspiring scene. This afternoon we noticed a “Jaw Bone Drop Box” at the St Anthony airport entrance. Upon doing some research I learned that there are 48 big game jawbone drop box locations across Newfoundland and Labrador to help the Wildlife Division track moose and caribou population health. Successful big game hunters are required to submit the lower jawbone of a moose or caribou that has been harvested under their licence. It is amazing what they can learn from the teeth of these animals. It truly is the strangest thing I ever photographed, but it is moose hunting season here in the province.
This evening, we checked into Hotel North for our two-night stay in St. Anthony. This week, we were delighted to celebrate Carol, Gary & Linda’s “39th” birthdays, and to mark the occasion, we presented each birthday person with Alan Doyle’s new book, The Smiling Land: All around the Circle in my Newfoundland.
