When I talk to families planning large family vacations or family reunions, I always recommend the same thing: book a cruise! 🛳

Why?

1. EVERYONE is entertained! The kids clubs entertain the youngest sailors, the dining options are diverse, and there are often casinos and a great night life for the adults. 🎰💃🏻

2. Everyone has their own space. Cruise cabins are limited on space, so each family has their own room for a bit of privacy when you need it. Family is great, but sometimes you need a quiet moment away from the chaos, and your room can provide that private escape. 😌

3. Doing your own thing... together. It isn't easy to plan an itinerary that pleases everyone. When you're on a cruise ship, there are so many things happening daily that everyone can find something that suits them. Some can go to the pool while others go to the trivia and grandma hits the casino, and you all can come back together for dinner and still feel like you're on a vacation together. It's my travel hack 😉

4. Group rates! If your family trip is big enough, you may be able to get group pricing for your vacation, unlocking additional perks for your whole family.

If you'd like to learn more about booking your next family vacation on a cruise, I'd love to chat! Comment below or send me a DM and we can go over the options.

Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes, they wear hobbit cloaks and carry a sword.

Some of you may know that one of the biggest inspirations for me becoming a travel agent was realizing that Middle Earth was filmed in New Zealand, using mostly physical sets and locations. I have been obsessed ever since, and now help people like myself get to experience travel that captures that part of their imagination.

Well, Arnesson Vanaud not only experienced my dream trip around Middle Earth in 2023, but he took photos and kept notes, including exact GPS coordinates to get the same photo.

"Okay, you have the gps coordinates, but what about everything else?"

If you want to book your own trip around Middle Earth, let me help. We'll find the lodging, transportation and experiences that make your vacation truly one-of-a-kind.

Thanks again to Arnaud for taking and sharing these photos and coordinates online!

Another exciting adventure is starting today! Caroline and her family are taking off to visit Disneyland Paris and Disney Adventure World for a week of Disney magic in Europe. I can't wait to hear what they think about the updates at the newly renamed Disney Adventure World.

If you could visit Disneyland Paris today, what ride or attractions would you make a beeline to first?

Travellers in 2026 are looking for more than just little trinkets when looking for souvenirs, they're looking for "shelfies" – beautiful pieces of art and culture that tell the story of your vacation.

Recently, I discovered an incredible collection of classes and experiences in Tokyo where tourists can try kintsugi – the art of repairing broken items with gold to honour the item's history and embrace the wabi-sabi philosophy of accepting imperfection. Imagine having something like this on display, knowing that YOU made that unique souvenir – talk about a conversation starter!

When you book your Japan vacation with Have Fandom Will Travel, your specific interests are the primary guide for building your itinerary, so every experience is catered to your interests. If you'd like to know more about booking your Japan vacation with us, leave a comment or send a DM and we can chat!

⛩️ Today is the Aoi Festival in Kyoto! ⛩️

May 15th is the first of the three big festivals/matsuri in Kyoto – the Aoi Matsuri, also known as the Hollyhock Festival in English. It features a 500-person procession through Kyoto, all dressed Heian-period attire. The festival originated in the 7th century, and was meant to appease deities during natural disasters. The parade is filled with men on horseback, massive bouquets of flowers, and ornately decorated ox-drawn carts. You'll also see many women in kimono accompanying the festival's saio, a young woman selected to act as the high priestess for the procession, carried on a palanquin.

If you'd like to watch today's procession, Visit Kyoto will be streaming it live on YouTube, starting at 1pm Japan time. That's midnight tonight for those of us in the Eastern time zone. You can find the link below. The stream will NOT be saved to watch afterwards, so make sure you tune in tonight.

If you'd like to check out one of these matsuri in person, there are two others happening this year: Gion Matsuri in July and the Jidai Matsuri on October 22nd. It's not too late to start planning for October!

It's the last day of Golden Week! 最後ゴールデンウイークの日だ!

Today is the holiday that is the most fun and has the most iconic imagery for Golden Week - Children's Day! This holiday used to be known as Boys Day, with Girls Day happening in March, but in 1948 the holiday was changed to Children's Day to be more inclusive and to celebrate the health and happiness of all children.

One of the most iconic decorations from Golden Week is the koi-no-bori, a carp-shaped windsock, and it is the main decoration from Children's Day. Families also display miniature Japanese armour called a Gogatsu Ningyo (五月人形), aka a May Doll and they also eat treats like kashiwa mochi and chimaki. Children's Day is also the most "fun" of the Golden Week holidays, and since Golden Week is a fun break for the entire country, it's easy to lean into the joy of Children's Day.

Like I mentioned, while this is the last Golden Week holiday, it's not the last day off. Since one of the days landed on a weekend, the official day off is carried over to tomorrow. It ends up being a solid week off for a country that does NOT get many vacations, and people take advantage. That's why I almost never book Japan during Golden Week, because the chaos is not worth it. March through May is a FANTASTIC time to visit Japan though! If you want to start planning your Japan trip for spring 2027, let's chat.

Also, a big thanks to Irasutoya for sharing their very cute art online for free! They have a great collection of art available for free on their site. https://www.irasutoya.com/

It's still Golden Week! まだゴールデンウイークだ!
Today is 🌳 Greenery Day 🌱, which has a really interesting backstory. When Emperor Showa passed away in 1989, Showa Day (April 29) was renamed to Greenery Day in honour of Emperor Showa's love for nature. After some time though, the government felt that younger generations were forgetting the original purpose of Showa Day, so they decided to separate the two holidays. April 29th returned to being Showa Day and then Greenery Day, a day to specifically celebrate nature and the environment.

Greenery Day is like a lovely marriage between Arbour Day and Victoria Day or something, where the whole point of the day is to appreciate nature and the warm weather and to go out and enjoy the good weather. Not sure what the weather is like everywhere else, but it's a really lovely day today, so I hope you all go out and enjoy it! ☀️

It's Golden Week! ゴールデンウイークだ!🎉

Today is Constitutional Memorial Day, and yes, the meaning is as fun as it sounds. This holiday is to reflect on the enactment of the Japanese Constitution in 1947. It's mean to emphasize the importance of democracy, pacifism and our fundamental human rights. It might sound like a heavy topic, but I think there's no way better to celebrate our rights and freedoms than by having a fantastic long weekend with family and friends.

Fun fact: Since this holiday lands on a Sunday, the day off will actually be carried over to Wednesday.

It's Golden Week!! ゴールデンウイークだ!
When people ask me to help plan their Japan vacation, there are two times of year that I discourage people from visiting for the first time. Golden Week is one of those times, but not for a bad reason.

Golden Week is THE vacation week for Japanese people. It is a collection of national holidays at the end of April and early May where almost everyone in Japan is off work. If you live in Japan, it's a really fun time. But it's also when everyone in the country travels, so hotels fill up quickly and everything is overwhelmingly busy, even if you're used to Japan-level crowds.

The first holiday in Golden Week is Showa Day (昭和の日) on April 29th. This holiday is actually a reflective holiday, where people are encouraged to reflect on the reign of Emperor Hirohito, otherwise known as the Showa Era. His reign from 1926 to 1989 was... turbulent, to say the least. I won't make this a history lesson, but the Showa era started with Japanese imperialism under a totalitarian emperor and ended with the "Japanese Miracle", taking the country from one devastated by war to one of the most technologically advanced countries on earth.

If I were to compare Showa Day to a Western national holiday, it would probably be Columbus Day because people have strong opinions right across the spectrum of how he should be remembered. However people choose to celebrate the holiday, it is the official beginning of Golden Week.

I'll post later today with TODAY'S holiday, the equally as fun sounding Constitutional Memorial Day. 🎉
