Part four of my trip to Australia: Layover in Sydney!

The flight from Vancouver to Sydney was pretty uneventful. I slept a lot but it wasn’t a great sleep. We landed at 6am in Sydney and luckily they had some day-stay rooms for us. While the rest of the group headed out to see Circular Quay but I took the morning to shower and rest a bit, and I eventually met up with the group at the Sydney Opera House. We had a short tour around the Opera House. Part of the group headed back to the hotel because they hit their wall, but since I rested before, a few others and I kept going and we walked along the botanical garden for a bit.

The highlight of the layover in Sydney? Cockatoos EVERYWHERE. They’re like the seagulls here and were hanging out with pigeons. Also, the JOY I felt when I saw the bin chicken in its natural habitat (a bin) was insane. I actually shouted “omg, bin chicken in its natural habitat!”

We flew out of Sydney around 9pm, arrived in Darwin at around midnight, and honestly? By that point I had hit 45 hours of consecutive travel time and stopped taking photos. Right now we’re in a bus heading out to a conservation area.

Part three of my trip to Australia: Layover in Vancouver — Stanley Park

I have attempted to post this THREE SEPARATE TIMES so far.

When I realized that I had a 12-hour layover in Vancouver, I knew that I wanted to visit Stanley Park. I was worried that it might be overhyped by others, but I was pleasantly surprised to see it was still somehow undersold. I loved the massive trees and the sea wall. Seeing the totem poles have been a bucket list item for me so finally getting to see them was fantastic.

My goal was to physically exhaust myself before my flight, and from the looks of my 20K steps that day, and the fact I slept pretty well on the flight, I’d say mission accomplished.

I am currently typing this while my flight to Darwin taxis out of Sydney airport. This travel day refuses to end! 😭😭

Part two of my travel day to Australia: Vancouver Layover — Canada Place

I don’t know if many people know this, but I absolutely adore planes and boats in the way a toddler might. I know nothing about makes or brands or the technical side of things, but I just love watching them. So of course my first stop in Vancouver had to be to the waterfront and Canada Place. Apparently the harbour in Vancouver is the busiest port for seaplanes on earth, so I watched a few take off and land and it was pretty much the best thing ever.

Sadly, there were no cruise ships in yesterday, but if you were to take an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver, this is where it would leave from.

Part one of my trip to Australia: the flight to Vancouver!

I didn’t sleep well the night before, so I was an exhausted mess through most of my flight. I managed to get about 2-3 hours of sleep before we were over the Rockies, which were being appropriately dramatic.

I LOVE the fact that Vancouver’s airport is filled with indigenous art, because I really love the designs from the pacific coast like these totem poles.

Once I was on the Canada line, it was time to go take in a few sights!

The bags are packed, I'm checked into my flight, and I am officially on my way to Darwin! 🛫🛫🛫 It'll take three BIG flights, but soon enough I'll be enjoying warm tropical breezes, palm trees, and those famous Top End sunsets along Mindil Beach.

Stay tuned right here as I explore everything from local wildlife and rich First Nations culture to incredible food markets and coastal landscapes over the coming weeks. Next stop: Australia! 🌅🇦🇺

I've planned everything I can, and one thing I am really looking forward to a bit of relaxing too. 🍹🏊‍♂️

Beyond the city of Darwin lies the vast beauty of the Top End wetlands and luxury savannah lodges. I would love to be sipping a cold drink in an infinity pool while watching the sun dip over the floodplains like this photo that I found while preparing for my trip.

I grew up in Northern Ontario and I had a lot of exposure to Canadian indigenous communities, so I'm really looking forward to experiencing Australian Aboriginal culture! Did you know Australian Aboriginal culture represents the oldest continuous living culture on Earth, spanning over 65,000 years?

Darwin is a major hub for Aboriginal art, and visiting the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the ultimate way to learn about the stories, traditions, and contemporary expressions of local Larrakia and NT artists. 🎨✨ I really like Australian aboriginal dot art, so I really hope I get to see some and maybe even try some.
