On this video, we’re taking you with us to experience one of the biggest celebrations on Pico Island, the **Festival of Our Lady of Lourdes**, also known as **Whalers’ Week (Festa de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes / Semana dos Baleeiros)** in the village of Lajes.

Festivals like this are such an important part of life in the Azores, bringing together the islands’ rich culture, traditions, history and community. Whalers’ Week does an amazing job of combining religion, music, food and the island’s deep connection to the sea.

Come hang out with us throughout the festival week — both on land and at sea, during the day and into the night.

We’ll join a **procession at sea**, experience what it’s like to be on a traditional whaling boat for the first time, explore the food kiosks, enjoy the regatta, listen to some amazing live music, try some delicious festival food and experience much more of what makes this celebration so special.

For us, this was a wonderful opportunity to experience another side of Pico Island and to share a little of its history, culture and traditions with you.

Life on Pico Island isn't always about work, and it's not always about play. Sometimes, it's about finding a little balance between the two — and that's exactly what we're doing in this video.

On the leisure side of island life, we get to experience the local Bom Jesus feast here in São Mateus village, one of those special moments that gives you a real taste of local life and community. We also experienced an absolutely incredible lightning storm one night — something we definitely weren't expecting! ⚡

We find some time to enjoy the coast, take in the island scenery, and cross over to the other side of Pico to spend some time with friends.

Then, of course, there's the work side of life. Back at Villa Vinelava, we prepare our vacation rental for our next guests and make sure everything is ready for their arrival.

Welcome back, friends!

On this week’s video, we’re taking another relaxing leisure walk around the beautiful village of São Mateus, located on the south coast of Pico Island in the Azores.

We’ll make our way through the heart of the village before heading down toward the coastal vineyard area. Along the way, we’ll stop and explore some of the places that make São Mateus so special, including a local grocery store, the church, the Bom Jesus Museum, old ruins, a cave, and of course, the beautiful vineyards along the coast.

This is a great way to experience Pico Island at a slower pace and see what everyday village life looks like here. The walk is considered low-level and easy, so you don't need to be an experienced hiker or be in great physical shape to enjoy this type of village and coastal walk.

We hope this video gives you a chance to relax, explore São Mateus with us, and perhaps discover a part of Pico Island you haven't seen before. We also witnessed a huge rainbow.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is slow down, take a break, and simply enjoy island life. After staying busy hosting guests, maintaining, and preparing our vacation rental, we decided it was time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that make Pico Island so special.

In this video, we spend a peaceful day exploring the island, starting with a refreshing swim at the beautiful São Mateus lava pools before taking a scenic drive to the charming village of Lajes do Pico. Back at Villa Vinelava, we prepare the house for our next guests and, as always, share a few honest thoughts about island life—including a small rant about a few things!

Today, we're opening up about our dream of building a glamping tourism project here on Pico Island, what has changed, and what we've decided to do with our beautiful coastal parcel of land. While this isn't the path we originally imagined, every journey has its twists and turns, and this is simply another chapter in ours.

We'll also share what the future may hold for us here in the Azores. Over the past six years, we've poured our hearts into building a life on Pico Island. It's been an incredible adventure filled with hard work, unforgettable experiences, and a deep connection to this amazing island.

We still love what we do, but our next steps need to be thoughtful and carefully planned. No matter what lies ahead, one thing hasn't changed—our love for Pico Island and our passion for sharing its beauty, culture, and island life with all of you.
