I had a question the other night at an event not related to travel. When one of the guests found out I was also a Travel Agent, she asked 'How DO you get paid? I want to know, because everyone tells me I should just book myself on Expedia so I don't have to pay a travel agent'... Have you ever wondered the same thing?

That question allowed me to explain to her that we ALL get paid the same way - by the suppliers. That Expedia, and Red Tag, and Sell-off Vacations, and Book-it, etc. etc., etc., are all travel agents too!! When you book from them, the supplier is paying the commission to a corporation; when you buy from a travel agent, the supplier is paying the commission to us - small business owners. YOU are not paying us...

98% of the time, we get EXACTLY the same pricing as the on-line travel agencies (Expedia, etc) get. There is the odd occasion that they also put on their own special, and we can't compete with those. But 98 times out of 100, we are exactly the same.

Some of my customers like to do the research themselves - then when they find what they want on Expedia (or wherever), they contact me and say 'book it'! Sometimes the resort they have chosen is perfect for them, but that also gives me the chance to let them know that perhaps that resort isn't going to work for them, and why. That is one of the benefits of working with a travel agent who has invested heavily in his/her business and knows the resorts first hand. We also know the difference between a 'sale' and why a resort is priced the way it is. Best price does not always equal best value - but sometimes it does!!
