Zho-s grazing by Litang Monastery, Litang County, Garze. If you turn up the volume you can hear them biting the grass. Zho-s are the mix of yak and cow, common throughout the Himalayan region. Yaks (male), di (female) and zho-s are inseparable from the Himalayas.

We also like to travel and we just returned from Eastern-Tibetan areas, most importantly Garze Tibetan Prefecture which is geopolitically located in Western-Sichuan. Although our trip focused more on the local landscapes and culture we still managed to see several wildlife species about which I will share some short reels here.

Himalayan griffon vultures, grasslands, nomad camps, and yaks. Welcome to Tibet!

A couple of majestic Himalayan griffon vultures (Gyps himalayensis) circling above us while we are hiking on the Maoya Grassland in Garze Tibetan Prefecture, Litang County. At the end of the video you can also see a nomad camp with hundreds of yaks, in the distance. This video gives a true taste how it feels to be on this land.
The Himalayan griffon is a giant bird, can be up to 1.2 meter tall while standing with a wingspan of 2.6-3 meters, weighing up to 12.5 kg. This is also the bird which will eat the human bodies during traditional Tibetan sky burials.

Two Himalayan marmots (Marmota himalayana) are 'fake-fighting' on Maoya Grassland, Litang County, Garze Autonomous Tibetan Prefecture, Sichuan where there are thousands of them living if not tens of thousands. These chubby, cute big rodents belong to the ground squirrel family (Sciuridae) just like all other marmot species, technically they are the largest ground squirrel species.

Black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) in the Tsopu Lake National Forest Park. This protected area provides nesting ground to the species. Seeing a single specimen at the end of May most probably meant that the other animal was sitting somewhere nearby on their nest. It is a very popular and culturally important crane species throughout the Himalayan region, such as the Tibetan Autonomous Region, Bhutan, China, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. It has near-threatened status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Grizzly sow with 2 one year old cubs casually approaching a road on a bike trail. As you can see we stopped with our car only for a few seconds when noticed the animals and started driving to give them way.

📸🐻 Just because bears are naturally photogenic doesn’t mean they’ve signed up for a photoshoot.

In Jasper National Park, you’re stepping into their world, so here are a few quick tips for keeping it safe (and still getting great photos):

🐾 Stay at least 100m away (unless you’re inside a vehicle)
🐾 If a bear woofs, growls, or snaps its jaws, it’s time to leave
🐾 Stay on designated trails and know how to travel safely in bear country: https://ow.ly/hIoj50YWb7q
🐾 Never feed, bait, or call wildlife for a photo

Anyone can snap a photo; the best wildlife photographers respect the wildlife first. 📷✨
