When Shayne and Sara Shyiak welcomed twins Luc and Brooklynn, their joy turned to concern when Luc began having seizures. The couple quickly realized that managing emergencies required intense planning.

“It’s a hard realization, thinking about all the things you need to take care of and plan for when your child experiences seizures,” says Shayne. “For example, going on holiday, you have to figure out things in advance, like: Where is the nearest hospital? Have we packed enough medication? Let’s make sure we’re in an area with cell phone reception in case of an emergency.”

That’s when KidSIM at Alberta Children’s Hospital stepped in. This innovative simulation program doesn’t just train medical staff—it also guides families. With life-like mannequins and personalized scenarios, the Shyiaks learned exactly how to handle Luc’s seizures, giving them critical skills—and peace of mind.

Hospital at Home provides in-home treatment and care for children and teens with cancers and blood and immunology disorders, making an extremely difficult time easier for families by minimizing trips to the hospital.

In 2023/24, the donation of a second vehicle and the addition of new staff enabled the Hospital at Home team to see more patients. The increased capacity allowed for new weekend appointments and in turn eased pressure on the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

From the frontlines of COVID-19 to Calgary’s largest Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) outbreak, Dr. Stephen Freedman’s donor-funded research is transforming pediatric infectious disease care.

A pediatric emergency physician and researcher, Dr. Freedman holds the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation Professorship in Child Health and Wellness and is now spearheading Canada’s Surveillance Program for the Rapid Identification and Tracking of Infectious Diseases in Kids.

This national network monitors respiratory viruses, providing real-time data to the public and policymakers to shape public health strategies and inform patient and family choices around vaccination.

His work ensures that children in Calgary — and beyond — receive the best possible care in the face of emerging infectious threats.
