Canada has introduced new rules for Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP), effective March 19. Spouses of international students can only apply for SOWPs if their partner is pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree. Previously, partners of undergraduate students were eligible, but this has changed. However, there are exceptions for certain professional degree programs.

Earlier on January 22, the department announced several modifications to Canada’s international student program. One notable change is that the spouses of international students enrolled in undergraduate and college programs will no longer qualify for SOWPs.

There are some exceptions for the spouses or partners of undergraduate students. Spouses of undergraduate students in one of the following professional degree programs at a university are also eligible to apply for a SOWP

Canada’s work rules shift: Longer stays for master’s grads!!!!

Starting February 15, 2024, Canada implements changes to its Post-Graduation Work Program (PGWP), granting master’s degree holders a three-year permit if they meet eligibility criteria.

However, from September 1, 2024, students in curriculum licensing agreement programs lose PGWP eligibility. Exceptional measures for distance learning and PGWP remain. PGWP allows international students to work anywhere in Canada for any employer post-graduation, depending on study level and passport expiry.

Eligibility requires graduation from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and willingness to temporarily work in Canada.

This occurs amid reports of Canada barring foreigners, including Nigerians, from property ownership due to housing shortages from international student and migrant worker influx
