Friendships that last a lifetime

We often find that orphaned elephants who arrive into our care shortly after one another form very strong bonds. Such was the case for Lesanju and Lempaute who were both rescued in 2006 from Samburu, Northern Kenya within months of one another.

While Lesanju was only a month old on rescue, Lempaute was even younger at just two weeks old. Both had very little recollection of their natal herds and quickly formed a friendship that has lasted to this day, nearly 13 years later. Following their graduation to Tsavo and their subsequent reintegration into the wild, the duo live in the protected areas surrounding the southern Tsavo Conservation Area. From time to time they come back together to our Voi Reintegration Unit to say ‘hello’, reminding us that their friendship is as strong as ever.
