ON: Extreme Cold Warning (-30 top -40 with wind chill) is not in northwestern Ontario from Kenora to Thunder Bay tonight into Sunday morning. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

Thunder Bay to Marathon via #17 Trans-Canada

The western portion of this route has sweeping views of Sleeping Giant and you pass Ouimet Canyon and Ontario’s amethyst mines (you can try some). When you reach Nipigon, you cross the SINGLE BRIDGE that connects western Canada with central and eastern Canada. Fortunately its architecturally stunning. East of Nipigon, the “North of Superior” stretch of the highway rises and falls offering stunning lake views as well as vistas of endless Northern Ontario forests.

Ignace to Thunder Bay via #17 Trans-Canada

Near Thunder Bay, this route passes the important fur trading for of Fort William, and the stunning Kakabeka Falls. As you move along the highway, you not only cross from Eastern to Central Time Zones, but the rivers (and you cross many of them) shift from flowing into the Great Lakes and the Atlantic to flowing up to Hudson’s Bay. You see stunning wilderness vistas, and drive through some very impressive rock cuts.

Kenora and Ignace via #17 Trans-Canada

The route near Kenora snakes alongside the rugged shoreline of Lake of the Woods (LOTW), ang then crosses overland, roughly following the railway route toward Thunder Bay. This section crosses through virgin forests, past pristine lakes, through some stunning rock cuts, and crosses some magnificent rivers.

Winnipeg to Kenora via #1 Trans-Canada

This stretch of highway between Winnipeg and Kenora crosses over the massive Winnipeg Floodway east of the city, the eastern extent of the Prairies, the German-Mennonite community of Steinbach. At Whiteshell Provincial Park it crosses into the Canadian Shield at the Ontario-Manitoba Border. From here, prairies lie west to the Rockies, and Canadian Shield lies east to the Ottawa River valley. The highway continues east, snakes around the northern shore of Lake of the Woods, into Kenora.

BC: Winter storm warning for Eagle Pass, Rogers Pass, the Columbia Valley to Golden, with snowfall of 30 to 40 cm falling Wednesday afternoon to Friday. Up to 30 cm of snow by Thursday evening, with 10 cm more on Friday.

MB/ON: Hazardous winter conditions along Trans-Canada MB #1 & ON #17 from Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg to Kenora, around Thunder Bay and east to Nipigon and Marathon. First winter storm of the season continues with 2 to 4 cm of snow and total snowfall accumulations of 25 to 40 cm. Lighter snow or flurries this afternoon or evening. Strong winds could result in reduced visibilities due to blowing snow. Driving conditions will be treacherous at times.
