The Bajan hospitality and vibe was out in full force tonight in Calgary as musicians, hoteliers and representatives from Barbados and the tourism board treated us to an exciting Bajan Safari around the island tonight!

The beauty of Barbados was brought to life and the spirit of the people capture our attention and it promises to be an island worth experiencing.

There has been exponential growth from Western Canada to Barbados, despite not having any direct for flights from the West. Westjet and Air Canada offer year round service to Barbados via Toronto, making the connections within Canada easy. So while it may not be the easiest to get there, we are promised it is harder to leave.

Is it time for a new passport?

You may be able to renew your passport online! Service Canada is accepting a limited number of online applications for renewals each day, if you don’t need it right away. If you are travelling 20 business days or more, you are eligible for the online passport renewal option and submit all the information required from the comfort of your own home. No need to stand in line and get to the passport office early!

And recently, Service Canada released a guarantee of “30 days or it’s free” commitment to highlight the efficiency and transparency of their process. (Note, it’s 30 business days)

While some of us still have nightmares about passport renewals and the stress of not receiving one until sooooo close to travel time, it looks like those days are long gone and we are entering a new stage in passport renewal that hopefully makes life easier and less stressful to get a new passport.

So, if you have travel plans and ideas percolating for this year, it may be worthwhile to also take a quick peek at your passport to see when you need to renew it and can plan accordingly!

Does the word “non-refundable” scare you as much as it does me?

I get it…..we’re all looking for the best deals and want to save money as best as we can! it can be very tempting to choose the lowest-priced rate or fare when booking airfare and hotel rates, especially when the non-refundable rates offer apparent savings.

But.....nonrefundable rates make me soooo nervous!

These rates often come with very strict terms and conditions that come with significant risks if your plans change unexpectedly and leave you with no options. You’re out the funds and may have to pay additional costs for revised plans or completely lose what you’ve paid if you need to cancel. While the upfront savings may seem appealing, the potential loss can be far greater if you need to cancel or change plans.

Don’t lock yourself into a rigid, non-refundable booking to save a few dollars. The initial savings you enjoyed at time of booking is now meaningless if you have to lose the entire cost of your trip.
 Opt for a slightly higher rate with some flexibility, so you have some peace of mind and protection against unexpected changes. And add travel protection plans to protect against unexpected changes so your funds are not completely lost. And that added flexibility can make all the difference in the world in case your travel plans shift. Paying a bit more for flexibility ensures that if life happens (as it does), the ability to adjust your plans without losing your hard earned money is well worth the cost.

When it pays to have travel insurance!

The little known aspect of travel insurance that doesn’t get talked about enough is trip interruption - any coverage in unexpected costs that may arise to due unforeseen changes or situations that impact your regular scheduled travel plans. This could be any delays in getting to your destination, the need to return home early and recouping non-refundable costs already paid but not used, or staying in destination longer than expected.

And for one of my clients, the flight assistance benefit included with their Manulife plan paid them immediately when their original flight was cancelled by the airline today. Each passenger received $140 as a benefit because the airline cancelled their flight. The kicker….they haven’t even left on vacation yet!

Their original flight was supposed to leave tomorrow. Since the airline cancelled one of their flights, they received their payout for the inconvenience right away. The airline rebooked them on a different itinerary so they still arrive at their destination only a few hours later than originally planned. And the payout they received more than compensated them for the price they paid for the original plan and they still have the full plan in place for their trip, including any additional unexpected situations that may occur.

With travel being unpredictable always, having the right travel insurance coverage can make all the difference in handling unexpected situations with ease. Have you made your vacation plans for 2025 yet? The last Tuesday in January has been officially designated “National Plan for Vacation Day” so you can intentionally carve out some time to plan your travels for 2025.

Make the time to make those memories!

There are a lot of tips out there to add an extra day or two to existing long weekends to stretch out those vacation days. And that can certainly be handy to minimize days off or taking the kids out of school unnecessarily. But also, these are considered peak travel times now so your flights are probably higher in cost and places may be busier than usual because the demand is higher. Everyone may be thinking of doing the same thing!

Instead, try shifting your days a bit by a day or two, or a week or two. If flexibility allows, it may be a bit more budget-friendly, allowing you to do more on your time off!

Our hearts are with LA right now, as is with many of us who are watching intently and praying for everyone whose lives are turned upside down and have suffered loss. Our prayers are with the brave first responders who are risking everything to battle the fires.

This is devastating beyond words. And it eerily brings back sadness and heartbreak of the fires in Jasper last year and Maui several years ago. Not to mention the fires that ravage our communities in BC and Alberta each summer. The scars of wildfires are never forgotten.

But the people and the resilience and strength of the community from nearby and afar proves that humanity’s spirit endures. 💕
