Wawa to Sault Ste Marie via #17 Trans-Canada

This was one of the most challenging sections of the Trans-Canada to build (see the “history” articles) through the Algoma Wilderness. The northern portion of this route has stunning high bridges (the most challenging part of the Trans-Canada construction), and the southern portion winds its way up and down hills overlooking Lake Superior’s eastern shoreline. Take an iconic “selfie” with the Wawa Canada Goose, and beside the Trans-Canada’s midpoint plaque at Batchwana Bay.

Marathon to Wawa via #17 Trans-Canada

This section provides lots of great lake views, sweeping forest vistas, great rock cuts, and views of the trans-continental railroad. The highway passes through or by several one-industry company towns for extracting Ontario’s amazing resource wealth and getting it to the world, via the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway.
