On Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, the Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) will reopen to regular vehicle traffic between Hope and Merritt.

01/19/2022

BC: Highway 99 weight restrictions will be lifted between Pemberton and Lillooet, on Wed, Jan. 19. However, drivers of large commercial vehicles are discouraged from using this route -- this challenging 100-km section features:
• Two-lanes, with no very limited passing opportunities
• Tight curves as low as 20 km/hr
• Narrow / steep sections (grades of up to 15% – gear down)
• Several single-lane bridges
• No fuel, food or cell service between Mt. Currie and Lillooet

12/31/2021

From BC Transportation: The Coquihalla Hwy (Hwy 5) has reopened between Hope and Merritt to essential commercial vehicles.

The route is available to commercial vehicles with a minimum licensed gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 11,794 kilograms.

With most commercial vehicles moving to Hwy 5, travel restrictions will be lifted from Hw 3, at 8 am tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec. 21), allowing the route between Hope and Princeton to be used for non-essential travel.

Travel restrictions have also been lifted from Hwy 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet. However, vehicles over 14,500 kilograms GVW are still not permitted on this section.

The Coquihalla was closed by multiple washouts on Nov. 14, and extensive repairs followed. More than 300 workers using 200 pieces of equipment moved more than 400,000 cubic metres of gravel, rock, and other material to repair and reopen the highway in just 35 days.

On the Coq, the speed limit is 60 km/h in repaired areas where traffic is one lane each way. Oversize loads are restricted:https://www.cvse.ca/CTPM/Notices/Notice-07-21-Oversize-Restrictions-for-Highway5.pdf
