You know that feeling when you think you know a place... and then it completely surprises you?
That's exactly what happened when I finally experienced Hawaii myself a couple of years ago after dreaming about going there since I was a teenager. As a travel advisor, I thought I understood these islands from pictures and client stories. I was so wrong! πΊ
Dave and I spent two weeks island-hopping with some wonderful clients-turned-friends, and honestly? The photos I'd been looking at for years don't even come close to the real thing.
The mountains literally stopped me in my tracks - they almost look like somebody's taken their hand and carved their fingernails into the side of a mountain, making these incredible vertical crevices. I kept trying to photograph them but my camera couldn't capture what my eyes were seeing.
And the beaches! You're going from black to salt & pepper, then you're sinking your feet into powdery brown sugar sand, and then pink sand and then red sand. On some beaches the sand felt like you were walking through a snow drift, it was that deep - I had no idea sand could vary that dramatically.
We found painted eucalyptus trees (didn't even know those existed!), discovered a secret beach where a seal was just sunning himself, and experienced climate changes that felt like magic. On the Big Island alone, we went from rainforest in Hilo to active volcano territory to near-desert conditions on the Kona side. All in one day!
Flowers of every colour bloom wild everywhere you look. Brilliant coloured rainbows welcome you on every island along with the most stunning sunsets.
The Road to Hana? Yes, it's winding and can feel overwhelming, but now we can walk our clients through exactly what to expect. And that shave ice with macadamia ice cream tucked inside? Nothing like anything back home! π§
Here's what I learned: Hawaii isn't a "sit on the beach for a week" destination. It's for adventurers, for people who want their breath taken away by landscapes that shift like you're driving through different planets. It's expensive, yes - but worth every penny when you give it the time it deserves.
Having walked those carved mountains and driven those incredible roads ourselves, we can now share Hawaii in a way that feels personal and true. Ready to fall in love with these islands the way we did? Let us make this trip unforgettable for you too! βοΈ
