Just another amazing day at the office. Come join us for a 3 hour tour and savour the awe. And we’re talking about “awe” as in an overwhelming sense of wonder as opposed to the “awe” sound that we humans make when we see baby whales and baby seals.

We have a nice clean covered vessel with two viewing decks and a Captain with over 10 years experience so he knows his stuff. Capt’n Dave is know to spin quite the stories about the animals, their lives, the area, its history and the local waters.

We have two 3 Hour tours daily at 10am and 2pm. Come play with us.

Wow, these guys are still at it and probably will be for the foreseeable future. This time of year, the humpbacks are gorging themselves before heading south in the late fall. One of the humpbacks is named Raza and every year, he follows the same routine, feeding dawn till dusk over the Wilby Shoal.

The trick to getting shots like this are to track the birds. The seagulls can see the whales underwater and will circle above the them waiting for their lunge. Just before the whales break the surface, their prey, in this case, little feeder fish will often try to escape by jumping out of the water….. and end up in the mouth of a daring bird. The whales eat, the birds eat, it’s all good.

We watched 13 different humpback whales today along with dolphins, harbour porpoises, steller sea lions, seals, and countless seabirds. All in all, another beautiful day on the water. Tours run at 10am and 2pm daily. Come join us.

We've had a couple Humpbacks bubble netting/lunge feeding in our area for a few days....hard to get close as they are in amongst the fishing fleet but here's a look! Today's 2 p.m. whale tour has seats available...

This time of year, the humpbacks are all picking up on their sense of urgency around feeding. Fall is coming so they need to bulk up for the winter since there is little to eat in Mexico and Hawaii. These two humpback whales will work together as an ultra efficient feeding machine, consuming around 2000 lbs a day of herring, hake and krill. By cooperating and working together as a team, they eat better with less effort. Its a Win/Win.

Wow! Quite the day out there today. One of the coolest things about being a wildlife guide is that, every day is different. You never know whats going to happen. Every day on the water is a great day but admittedly, some days are better than others. Today was one of those days.

We came across a single humpback that was breaching repeatedly for almost an hour. A breach is when they hurl themselves into the air and come down with a mighty splash. Its truly awe inspiring to witness. My camera is showing at least 30 breaches captured today and I missed a bunch. Ten years of guiding and today’s breach fest will be one of my more memorable ones for sure.

Often we’ll come across singles doing this frenetic, one after the other breaches and the agreed upon theory is that its communication, is that it’s a shout out to other whales in the area, possibly looking for a feeding partner or perhaps a reason as simple as seeking some company. The concussion from them landing creates an underwater boom that can carry 3-4 miles alerting any whales in the area of their presence. More often than not, humpbacks will be in the company of another whale or whales and breaching does appear to be a factor in finding partners. Another time I’ve noticed breaching behaviours is when they come together and depart each other’s company. Could it be the cetacean version of the “zoomies” or is it an alpha test to see who’s going to run the hunt? We can only speculate.

When we witness a breach on tour, I’ll advise our guests to scan the horizon as there is often an answer in the form of another breach from another humpback off in the distance. Not long after I explained the “call and answer” behaviour today, a single was spotted a mile away to the northeast, no breach, just popped up off in the distance. A few minutes later, another different one was coming from the east. Within minutes all 3 of them were splashing and pec slapping together. The breaching stopped, they went back to feeding. It was incredible to witness.
