Happy International Wild Salmon Day!
British Columbia is home to five species of Pacific salmon, Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum. As a keystone species, salmon support entire ecosystems!
For bears, salmon are one of the most important foods of the year. As we approach autumn, bears enter hyperphagia, a period of intense feeding where they will consume approximately 20,000 calories a day! These fat reserves help bears survive winter denning and, for females, support reproduction. Female bears experience delayed implantation, meaning pregnancy only begins if they have accumulated enough body fat going into winter.
The relationship between bears and salmon extends beyond a food source. When bears carry salmon into the forest, they help move marine nutrients from streams into surrounding ecosystems, benefiting plants, trees, and other wildlife.
Bears may be the focus of our industry, but today we feel immense gratitude to wild salmon and all they provide year after year.
