An iconic photo of the Salish Sea, showcasing some of what makes this region breathtakingly beautiful.

A humpback whale (Qʷ̓ənɛs [kwan-ess]) dives into the sea under the backdrop of forest, hills, clouds, and mountains of the coast off of Campbell River.

June 1st marks International Wild Salmon Day, where organizations across the globe recognize the importance of this legendary fish to ecosystems around the globe.

The salmon are one of the main reasons that local First Nations chose this region to live as they have been a vital source of food since time immemorial. The salmon are crucial in feeding many of the species who reside in this area. We have 5 species of salmon that run through these waters:

kʷətɛčɩn [kwa-tee-chin]: Pink Salmon
ƛoχʷay [klo-hoy]: Chum Salmon
θat̓ᶿəm [th-at-th-um]: Spring Salmon
θəqay [th-a-kay]: Sockeye Salmon
χɛθɛqʷ [th-ey-th-e-qw]: Coho Salmon

Today, the Homalco People continue to act as stewards in this region and recognize the importance of healthy salmon runs play in a healthy coastal ecosystem. This is why the Homalco First Nation has spent the last 30 years operating the Salmon Hatchery at Orford Bay, with plans to expand the salmon enhancement activities in the Homathko and Southgate River systems.

At Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours each of our tours generates funds for the Orford Bay Salmon Hatchery in an effort to keep the wild salmon population at a healthy level.

Join us on one of our tours to Orford Bay to learn more about the Homalco's efforts to support BC's salmon populations, and the ecosystems supported therein.

Around June of each year, the Eagles (q̓aykʷ [ki-kwh]) gather in great number around the Discovery Islands to feast on hake. Hundreds of them can be spotted dotting the tree lines and diving among the turbulent waters.

Conditions for this activity are highly dependent on the changing tides, but our full-day tours in June have the best chance to catch it live.

Ayajuthem word of the week: p̓əl̓
(paul-uh)

p̓əl̓ translates to “Heron”

According to Coast Salish legend, Heron was a man who had ambitions to kill a legendary figure known as "The Transformer". Heron prepared for The Transformer's arrival by sharpening sticks into spears. While Heron was distracted by his spear-making, The Transformer came to ask Heron what he was doing. Not realizing who he was speaking to, Heron told The Transformer why he was making the spears. The Transformer took the spears and stuck them in Heron's face and under his body. The Transformer said, "From now on, you will wait in the water with those long legs and get your food with that long beak!"

Today, we often see Heron at the water's edge, doing just that.

ʔayʔaǰuθəm (Ayajuthem), the ancestral language shared by the Coast Salish Peoples of the Homalco, Klahoose, Tla’amin, and K’ómoks Nations, is considered to be a critically endangered language with fewer than 50 fluent speakers. We thank the Elders of these four Nations, as well as those at the First Peoples’ Cultural Foundation, for their time and dedication in preserving the Ayajuthem language.
