Smutwood Peak — quite simply one of our favourites in Kananaskis.

The trail starts mellow through forest before opening into a huge alpine basin beneath Mt. Birdwood, and from there the scenery just keeps getting bigger.

Turquoise lakes below, towering limestone walls, and jaw dropping views once you gain the ridge.

The final push to the summit involves a short scramble, so scrambling experience is required and you’ll want to be comfortable with exposure. Nothing extreme, but definitely not just a casual walk-up.

Standing on the ridge honestly feels like something out of Lord of the Rings — massive peaks in every direction and that wild, untouched alpine terrain that makes the Rockies so special.

Smutwood is arguably one of the best summit payoffs around.

Yamnuska Wolf Dog Sanctuary is a nonprofit rescue that started in 2011 to help wolfdogs that couldn’t stay in their homes. They take in surrendered and displaced animals, give them the space and structure they need, and focus on education so fewer wolfdogs end up in the wrong situations.

When we think larches, we think Pocaterra Ridge! This is the larchiest hike in Kananaskis—an autumn showpiece that rolls across ridge after ridge of golden brilliance. Most call it four distinct ridges, but depending how you break the terrain, it can feel like five. After the first climb through a valley of larches, you crest a shoulder that some hikers count as its own “mini-ridge.” From there, the trail carries you over open meadows, ridgelines with constant views of Elbow Lake, Mount Rae, and Mist Mountain, and groves that glow at their peak.

South to north saves about 300 m of climbing and flows more naturally, while an out-and-back, better known as South Pocaterra Ridge, doubles the distance. That option gives you more time in the larches but less variety, since you’re retracing the same path instead of experiencing the full ridge traverse.

A busy week ahead in the Canadian Rockies.

We have 10 trips scheduled for the 9 days beginning Monday, including double tours on Wednesday and Thursday.

We also mark a new chapter and partnership with Alpine Helicopters, we 3 private helicopter rides scheduled.
