Cave Week is back! 🌎🕳️

From June 1–7, people around the world are celebrating caves, karst landscapes, underground science, exploration, conservation, and the hidden ecosystems beneath our feet.

Caves are far more than just holes in the ground. They help supply drinking water to millions of people, preserve ancient climate records, protect unique species found nowhere else on Earth, and continue to play an important role in geology, biology, archaeology, paleontology, and scientific research.

The goal of Cave Week is simple: help people learn more about the underground world and why it matters.

Want to join in? Here are a few ways:

🔦 Visit a cave or cave-related site
🦇 Learn about cave wildlife and conservation
📚 Read about cave science and exploration
🎥 Watch cave documentaries or virtual cave tours
📸 Share your own cave photos and stories using and tag us at Canmore Cave Tours
🧹 Participate in cave or karst cleanup events
🌎 Support organizations helping protect fragile cave environments

Some great resources to explore:
• National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI)
• National Park Service Cave Week pages
• National Speleological Society Speleological Society
• UIS - Union Internationale de Spéléologie UNESCO’s International Day of Caves and Karst initiative
• Alberta Speleological Society

Whether you are a lifelong caver, curious about your first cave tour, or just fascinated by the underground world, Cave Week is a great reminder that there is still so much left to discover beneath the surface.

Be there on June 3 at 7pm with Alpine Helicopters, , , and .ca in attendance.

Here is Chris Robertson with a helpful tidbit on what you can do to help avoid seeing him in the backcountry (better to meet at a pub in town anyway 😉)... just a sneak peak into the helpful info you will hear on June 3.

Abukuma-dō Cave, located in Fukushima Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most well-known limestone cave systems. The cave formed within limestone that began as ancient marine sediments roughly 300 million years ago, long before Japan existed in its modern form. Over millions of years, groundwater slowly carved passages through the rock, creating chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and rare boxwork formations.

The cave was only discovered in 1969 during limestone quarrying operations, with larger chambers explored shortly after by a university expedition team. Today, more than 600 metres of the cave are open to visitors, though several kilometres of passage still remain closed to the public. One of the largest chambers, Takine Palace, reaches nearly 30 metres high and contains dense clusters of calcite formations shaped by thousands of years of mineral-rich water movement.

Inside, temperatures stay around 14–15°C year-round with extremely high humidity, creating a stable environment for both the cave formations and the small species that live there, including bats, salamanders, cave crickets, and pseudoscorpions. Visitors can explore the cave through a guided walking route, with an optional exploration section that passes through narrower and more rugged passages.

This is your sign to do something different this summer…well, actually, it is our sign, but you get the point.

As summer quickly approaches, here are a few things to keep in mind:

☎️ Book ahead — tours fill up quickly, especially on the weekends

☔ We run rain or shine....or snow, sleet, hail. Sometimes all on the same day

👌 No experience needed, but a sense of adventure helps

⛑️ All equipment is provided. Mud included at no extra charge

🚶 Kids ages 10–99 welcome

😯 Expect crawling, squeezing, climbing, and a few surprises along the way

Not your average day in the Rockies.

As we age, it's not about giving up activities we love, but about adapting how we engage with them. Whether it's modifying a workout, exploring new hobbies, or adjusting daily routines, adaptability is key to maintaining vitality. 💪
