Fun Fact Friday! 🌕 Did you know the phrase "once in a blue moon" comes from a real astronomical event? The only blue moon of 2026 occurred on May 31. However, a blue moon isn't actually blue. The name is given to the second full moon in a calendar month. Since the moon's cycle is about 29.5 days long, having two full moons in one month is relatively rare, happening only about every two to three years! The May 31 blue was also a "micromoon," meaning the Moon was near its farthest point from Earth and appeared slightly smaller and dimmer than usual. ✨ The next full moon is the June Strawberry Moon on June 29. Book your suite now to see the full moon over the Rockies! 🏔

You can enjoy this stretch of road from 8 am to 8 pm, then it closes to minimize wildlife disturbances. 🦌 You can check the Parks Canada website for full details including parking. Know before you go, so you're prepared for the best experience! Return to The Lodges and soothe your muscles with a soak in one of our three outdoor hot tubs. 🔥

🐦 Fun Fact Friday! The Red-winged Blackbird is one of spring’s boldest voices! 🌾
While a lot of us associate the return of the Robin as one of the of the first signs that warmer days are returning to Alberta, so too is the Red-winged Blackbird. It is the unmistakable “conk-la-REE!” call of the Red-winged Blackbird that echoes through marshes and wetlands. Did you know those beautiful and distinct bright red-and-yellow shoulder patches on the male (called epaulets) aren’t just for show? These striking feathers on the male are actually a warning signal! They are used to defend their territory, puffing them out to look bigger and more intimidating to rivals. They’re fiercely protective and have even been known to swoop at much larger animals, including hikers! 😄Females however, are beautifully camouflaged in streaky brown plumage, helping them blend into cattails while nesting. Next time you’re walking near a pond or marsh in Canmore, listen for their unmistakable song and watch for that brilliant flash of red. Nature is announcing that spring is here! 🌿
📸 On your visit to Canmore this summer, take a walk along the Policeman's Creek boardwalk, within walking distance from The Lodges, and see if you can spot or hear a Red-winged Blackbird.

🌿 Fun Fact Friday! Have you noticed those soft, fuzzy tassel-like strands hanging from aspens and willows around town? They're known as catkins and basically represent the trees flower clusters! You may be familiar with the little soft p***y willows which are also a type of catkin. Because willow catkins come out earlier in spring, they're draped in a fuzzy wool coat unlike their aspen and poplar cousins. 🌼Instead of relying on bees or butterflies to pollinate their seeds, catkins release clouds of pollen into the wind to find their match. Here in the Rockies, the catkins are one of the first signs of spring appearing well before the leaves! So next time you spot those fluffy danglers swaying in the breeze, you’re looking at a tree getting ready to grow the next generation 🌱and a sign that warmer weather is around the corner! Book your spring getaway now!

Fun Fact Friday! Have you seen a little grey bird hopping around your yard this winter? It's likely a Dark-eyed junco and it has incredible hidden talents! Juncos migrate thousands of kilometers each year and scientists have discovered they can actually sense Earth’s magnetic field to navigate. They also use their sense of smell to recognize family members and “map” their surroundings by scent, detecting things like soil, water, and plants as they travel. If you don't have these cute little birds where you live, next time you visit The Lodges look for its dark hood and flash of white tail feathers in flight. You’re watching a tiny backyard bird with some seriously impressive built-in GPS. 🌎✨
