TOP 5 Winter Hikes in Banff
Upper Falls & the Secret Cave – Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon in winter is something special, and the hike to the Upper Falls easily earns its place in our top 5 winter hikes in Banff.
The trail follows the canyon through snow-covered trees, frozen canyon walls, and a half-frozen creek that keeps moving all winter long. Elevated catwalks wind through the canyon, giving you nonstop scenery the entire way.
One of the highlights of this hike is a hidden secret cave tucked just off the main trail near the Upper Falls. It’s easy to walk right past it if you don’t know where to look, but if you time it right in winter, you’re rewarded with incredible views, tucked-away waterfalls, and a completely different perspective of the canyon.
The hike to the Upper Falls is roughly 5.5 km round trip, with about 120 metres of elevation gain, and takes around 2 to 3 hours in winter, depending on snow conditions and how often you stop — which you will.
At the Upper Falls viewpoint, you’re often treated to massive ice formations and, if you’re lucky, the chance to watch ice climbers working their way up frozen walls. It’s one of those moments where you just stop and take it all in.
We planned to continue on to the Ink Pots, but winter days are short, and sometimes the mountain decides when it’s time to turn around — which is all part of the experience.
A beautiful trail, hidden features you can easily miss, and one of the most rewarding winter walks in the park.
This one’s a must.
