Ben Thompson is our next featured guide in our Meet the Guide series!

Born and raised in Canmore, Alberta, Ben is an ACMG Apprentice Rock and Ski Guide. With over 15 years of climbing experience and four summers of professional guiding under his belt, he’s currently working toward becoming a fully certified IFMGA Mountain Guide.
We asked Ben a few questions so we can all get to know him a little better!

What personal mountain objective is still on your bucket list?
There’s so many routes I dream about, but the one I’ve been thinking about the most recently is “All along the watchtower” on the North Howser Spire in the Bugabos!

What’s your favourite piece of gear you never leave home without?
My collapsible hiking pole! You have to take care of the knees!

Do you prefer winter or summer objectives?
I’d lean slightly more toward summer objectives, but whatever season im in is what I’m most excited about!

What has been your most memorable objective or climb to date?
Probably Climbing the Becker Chouinard on my first trip to the bugaboos with three of my childhood friends!

What’s one mountain skill every beginner should learn?
How to improvise if you drop/lose your belay device!

What’s your go-to snack for a long day in the mountains?
Any sort of sour candy to keep the blood sugar up!

Thanks for your time Ben, happy climbing! 🧗🏼‍♂️

Sebastian is the first feature in our new Meet the Guides series!

Sebastian is a passionate climber nicknamed "The Praying Mantis" because, in his words, "if I like you, I'll chew your head off."

We asked him a few quick questions so you can get to know him a little better.

What personal mountain objective is still on your bucket list?
Mount Robson. And I have a long list of first ascents I'd like to do that just keeps getting longer every year.

What's your favourite piece of gear you never leave home without? My personalized helmet.

Summer or winter objectives?
Winter, hands down. Ice climbing is the best: ephemeral natural lines that flow down the mountains, change through the season, and disappear again in the spring.

What's been your most memorable objective or climb to date?
Some of the ice lines we've established have been incredibly rewarding, including Katana, Play with Fay, Smith & Wesson, and Ferrethawk. They're fairly obscure outside the local climbing community, but special projects nonetheless.

What's one mountain skill every beginner should learn?
Master the fundamentals. Anchors, rappelling, decision-making, hazard assessment, and developing systems that work reliably in most situations.

What's your go-to snack for a long day in the mountains?
Beer, with something salty on the side, sausage, nuts, or chips.
