Did you know that one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses was born just southwest of Cardston?

Born in 1907 on a ranch called Wrayland, Fay Wray went on to star in more than 90 films, but she is best remembered for her unforgettable role in the 1933 classic King Kong. Her performance helped make the film one of the most influential movies of its time, and her name became recognized around the world.

Although her family left the area when she was very young, Fay Wray never forgot her Southern Alberta roots. She returned to Cardston in 1962 for the town’s Diamond Jubilee and again in 1993 for the unveiling of the Fay Wray Fountain on Main Street, a tribute to one of Cardston’s most celebrated residents.

Today, visitors can stop by the fountain, learn about her remarkable story, and discover how a girl born in rural Alberta became one of Hollywood’s legendary stars.

This Thursday, we’re going to take a look at the Re*****on Carriage Museum. Located just off Main Street, this gem was built in 1993. It is home to over 330 horse-drawn vehicles, making it the largest museum of its kind in the world.

Now, you might wonder how a town with a population of just under 4,000 ended up with a museum of this quality and size.

Well, that story begins back in the 1950s with a man named Don Re*****on.

At the time, Don was put in charge of the Christmas parade. In previous years, Santa Claus had ridden in the back of a truck. Don didn’t think that was right, so he took matters into his own hands and bought a small cutter for Santa to ride in. That sleigh is still part of the museum’s collection today.

After that, Don Re*****on began his hobby of collecting and restoring carriages. He amassed a collection of nearly 50 vehicles and decided it would be best to donate them to the government. The government built the Re*****on Carriage Museum to house Don’s initial collection and designed it with room to grow. Over the years, the collection expanded through donations from other museums, private collectors, and individuals.

Today, the museum offers carriage rides, a short film, guided tours, and access to its stables and restoration shop. Thanks to Don Re*****on, visitors can appreciate the rich history of horse-drawn transportation and learn more about the past.
