Throwback Thursday | A Landmark That Helped Shape Cardston
Long before it became one of Cardston's most recognizable landmarks, the Cardston Alberta Temple began as a dream shared by the early settlers of Southern Alberta. In 1912, it was announced that Cardston had been chosen as the site for the first temple to be built in Canada, and construction officially began the following year. This beautiful temple was dedicated on August 26, 1923, after ten years of planning and construction.
Built from white granite quarried near Nelson, British Columbia, the temple's distinctive design and craftsmanship have made it one of the community's most treasured landmarks. For 67 years, it was the only temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Canada, welcoming members from across the country.
In 1991, following an extensive three-year restoration, more than 101,000 visitors from around the world toured the building during a special public open house before it was rededicated. Four years later, in 1995, the temple was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada, celebrating both its architectural beauty and its important place in Canadian history.
Today, the Cardston Alberta Temple remains an iconic part of the community and a must-see landmark for visitors exploring Southern Alberta.
